If anyone is considering this, I would suggest watching youtube, so that you know what what to expect when loading the cars.
Some dude wanted this deal at Amtrak and they creating this whole dog and pony show lol!

It's always cheaper to go south in the Hot Summer season than vice-versa
Be mindful also that there are limited number of trains and recently my parent in law were stuck in Lorton, VA waiting on the train for near 12 hours because there was an equipment failure and they has to wait for northbound train to get there to swap the engine to go south.
It took Amtrak 3 days to get the schedule right again so everyone for 3 days going north and south were delayed.
Best thing you can do is follow facebook groups that have people traveling on the trains north and south and of the north one is delayed the south one will become delayed it is a domino effect.
