22TB drives have not been in production 5 years. The earliest review I could find was from August 18, 2022 from a Western digital gold.

https://www.storagereview.com/rev...hdd-review

So less than 3 years use maximum.
Prices of refurbs tend to drop towards the end of the year as datacenters liquidate "aging" drives. That's what we saw last year, there was just a flood of cheap really good quality refurbs.
These drives have like a 2 million hours MTBF rating... So even supposing 5 years in a data center:

5 years = 24 x 365 x 5 = 43,800 hours

This is only a fraction of the 2 million so these drives still have a lot to give!

Check over in https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/ if you are concerned about factory-recertified enterprise-class drives.

Looks like all the 20TB versions are now 4% off leading to a price of $230. So about $10 cheaper than the $240 price they started off with yesterday (still same URLs). And no YMMV, one-time use, unique code $5 coupon involved.

That's a good thing to know. However, stating that without explanation is not helpful. AND, in such explanation, can one surmise any correlation to longevity? If not, what is the purpose of "reporting"/"publishing" MTBF by manufacturers? BTW, I know what the acronym stands for. By statistics, it's just that-statistics. So, it still should be reliable... as I understand statistics. Please elaborate answers to my questions and expand on your response, "That's not what MTBF rating means."
You might find this [seagate.com] helpful. One point I try to drive home:

AFR and MTBF are population statistics that are not relevant to individual units.

Sure but drive failures are not a bell curve, if anything it's the opposite. Failures are clustered at the beginning and end of the expected lifespan, so any used drive should be expected to last beyond the MTBF.
You are correct that drives follow a bath tub curve. However the MTBF does not mean that is how long a drive is supposed to last. 2 million hours is over 228+ years. If drives lasted longer than that then warranties would match. Since drives only come with a 5 year warranty you can be sure that Seagate did the math and calculated that drives will start failing after that time. Backblaze showed a 35% failure rate at 6 years, well into the end of the bath tub curb.

So this would not be good for a plex server right?
They work fine in a Plex server. But I wouldn't recommend Plex on anything but a 2 drive mirrored setup, or a 2 Bay NAS running plex.

I'm not aware of any 22TB 5400RPM drives. There are some people who would actually want such drives.

What are you on about? I've been running plex on my unraid box with 6x8TB drives without issues for years.

I was referring to Plex users that run it on a single hard drive. Not multi hard drive users.

They also have 3TB SAS on their website with 3 year warranty for $12 shipped. Mine turned out to be a Toshiba model, $4 a Terabyte.

Can we use these for storing movies?

Can you? Yes.

Is it ideal? Depends on use and how you set it up

I used to be on the fence about refurbs, but gohdd has been incredible about replacing drives no questions asked. I've bought 10+ drives from them with 2 failing within the first month of use and they replaced them super quickly. Not sure about other vendors but my experience with gohdd has been great.

Difference between NAS and enterprise drives?

Mostly firmware changes. Physically not much difference at all. If you have hardware that can take advantage of the firmware changes, it can be nice.
