There are several excellent custom firmwares for the Anbernic XX line, such as MuOS, Knulli, MinUI, and a modified stock OS as an alternative.

This is an incredible price for a great throw-in-your-bag, don't-mind-if-it-gets-beat-up retro handheld. As others have said, budget for a name brand SD card and do a clean install, add your own ROM collection rather than relying on the poorly organized stock card. If the stock card is Kioxia it's likely reliable enough, you can re-flash it and use it for your boot drive.
I think the 35xx h is way better for people who don't care about nostalgia.

Curious what people are using and like. Knulli or MuOS? Going to buy another SD card tomorrow and build one of those on it. Likely MuOS.
Also not sure if I got the version 2 of this or not as it doesn't seem to rattle much. Still loud to press the buttons though. Going to mod it as well with tape.

Check for some sort of heat shielding behind the battery. It's literally resting on the chip.
Found that I didn't have a torx T6 bit so had to stop at lowes to get one. This one works great for anyone that found themselves needing one too....

Just finished my tape mod. Wow what a world of difference. I went from almost regret of buying it because it was so loud to it is wonderful.
I used painters tape (masking tape).
Did 4 layers on directional pad and X Y A B buttons. Did 2 layers on Menu and Select Start buttons. Did 3 layers on R1 and R2 and only 2 layers on L1 and L2. I had a piece of foam between R1 / R2 and between L1 / L2. Wow wow wow what a difference.
