If you mean Double Edge by DE, I agree that is cheaper, but I have not been able to shave with DE without cutting myself and I have a very good adjustable handle for the DE razors. So, what's the secret?
It's been more than 6 ot 7 years since I started wearing a full beard now; wanted to age gracefully Before that, I used to shave clean.
So after using those Gillette one blade, two blade, three blade, five blade, 10 blade, not sure, I gave up because it was too expensive.
Thanks to SD, there was extensive- I mean seriously massive discussion happening on this forum where people swear by how cheap and good the DE blade shaving is and how good it is for skin and all, so some 10 or 12 years back, I switched to wet shaving with DE blade.
I cut myself so many times initially, tried many blades and handles.
Finally, I settled on a Feather DE Blade from Japan. The Japanese know how to make a sharp blade, and it was still my favorite. Also, after trying several handles, I settled on the Merkur Handle. After the initial cost of the Blades, BTW was very cheap, but Handle was a bit expensive. Still, overall, I used wet shaving with DE blade for almost 10 years and it save me not only tons of money, but, boy, every time I look forward to shaving like a morning ritual, it was fun, I have a good setup of Blade, Handle holder, lather and brush. You need to get used and then you will enjoy DE shaving a lot. Believe your skin with thank you later.
Also, once you go wet shaving with DE you won't go back to Gillette again.
I got these on Black Friday and regret the purchase. Unless you shave daily the blades get totally jammed with hair, and unlike the Dorco five blade system I was using before these, these ones are super difficult to clean the hairs out no matter which angles I put it under the running water, or how I tap/bang it on the basin. I'm tempted to call it a loss and just reorder more of my Dorcos.

You can call me lazy, but at under a buck for a 5 blade cartridge (Perplexity says national average now is $5 for women's and $4 for men's), even if I get 4 shaves, without shaving off any moles or bloodshed, I am willing to part with even the shiniest quarter for the privilege. And it will ship in a couple days with the rest of my S&S...happy customer.
That's the value-call. You will get more than 4 shaves from each one for sure. This cartridge is a very big seller, although it's hard to tell because it is sold under so many different brand names, not just one. You will notice that Schick and Gillette never compete head to head in marketing. Schick compete with Gillette indirectly by producing blades that sell primarily under private labels. Once you start using these, you will recognize the distinctive blue comfort strips in other brands' 5-blade cartridges. Also note that the Motion Sphere handle isn't just a gimmick. It improves blade contact with skin and that increases closeness and comfort. Gillette offer a similar technology with their Fusion product. They call it Flexball or something like that.

There have been so many free/cheap deals on SD over the years, I have a stock of razors to use. I broke open a Fusion 5 from 2009 last week.

That said, there is no better value than a Fusion 5. I shave every other day and each razor lasts me between 4 and 6 months.
I miss those CVS free deals. I stopped purchasing after some time as I had difficulty in storing. I regret that decision. Now I am at last leg of blades, with a teenage kid learning to shave. Need free deals again to stock up.

This is the razor that was recommended to me to start with and I've tried others but keep coming back to it even though it's 7 bucks:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004N77JVY

Then get yourself a sample pack of blades, there are a ton of options on Amazon. Personally, I like Gillette, Derby, Astra.

I also recommend a good fragrance free face lotion for after your shave. I like lubriderm, but it looks like the one I like might be discontinued, ugh.

Oh LORD

Bought this. Thought it might be a good replacement for my roughing razor so I could use a higher quality one to finish the job, as my roughing razor is running out of blades and has been discontinued (sued out of existence) and it just is not that sharp. Instead of nicely cutting away the hairs, it pulls and yanks and then finally severs the hair.

I'm an odd shaver. I use a weaker razor to get rid of the mass of hair I allow to grow out over a week or so, and then I came back and use a finishing razor to smooth things out. With this method a pair of blades will last me up to a year and I get a nice clean shave for the times I want to have one.

Anyways. I think with the 5 blades, it does not have enough clearance for 5 days of growth to get through, and the blade is not sharp enough to smooth shave. My wife agreed, it was not close enough.

Edit: Hmm, I guess Dorco is still in business here.

If you are wanting to switch to a DE razor and haven't used one before, the one I use that i have found is the closest DE to regular razors like these is the Leaf Twig Razor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QBT7247

It has a small head, so it fits easily under areas like your nose while shaving. Yes, It is only a single blade shaver, but I find that I can shave several day old growth in 1 stroke effortlessly, while the cartridge style, the blades are so close together, several day old growth would clog the cartridge with every stroke and I would have to use a trimmer first, or do multiple strokes and flush the blade constantly. This one can use DE blades, but you snap the blades in half while they are in the paper cover (very easy to do), meaning you get double the amount of blades in the box. (You can also buy single edge blades to use if you don't want to snap the DE ones in half). I use the yellow package Feather blades on Amazon, which I bought 50 blades for around $16, which, as I am snapping them in half, makes it 100 blades for around $16.

Out of all the DE razors I have tried, this one i find is the easiest to use, can be used in a hurry like cartridge razors and is much less likely to cut yourself up with (definitely not impossible) vs other DE's.

You can use canned shaving gel with it if you want, I like the Harry's Shaving Gel with aloe as it is quick and easy and is like $5 a can.

Not a bad deal for a 5-blade razor set. 16 cartridges should last a good while

I had the exact same setup, Merkur handle, Feather blades, and the whole setup with the brush and bowl and cream.

I gave up on it after 3 months. I went back to Gilette multiblade. I dry them really really well after each use, and strop with a spare piece of denim, and before I shave I trim off the excess length with a salon style hair clipper. With this method a fusion head lasts me about a year. Longer if I keep the head in a bit of mineral oil or baby oil. I bought like a 20 pack of razor heads at a swap meet in 2010 and I'm still using that same purchase. Infact, I'm still using the handle Gilette sent me in high school, I think it's literally the oldest thing I own that I still use.

Protip: shave immediately after a shower. The hair is softer and makes it easier to cut. Do the same for fingernail and toenails

I have just shaved in the shower since I was a teenager.

I am bummed to find out that dorco no longer exists. I bought probably about 40 blades six or seven years ago and I'm down to like two so I was going to repurchase and I'm SOL. They were pretty okay. Great shave about 3 or 4 times. I only shave my neck and do it maybe once or twice a week so it is lasted me a very very long time.

I just use an electric razer. It's convenient and does a good enough job. A few passes every day and I'm done.

I have very thick hair that clogs razors all the time. I also am prone to in-grown hairs since my hair is a bit curly. Thanks to SD, I swapped to DE blades about 11 years ago. DEs are good for thick hair as they don't clog. They are also good for preventing razor burn since they don't cut as close as a mach 5 (unless you are shaving against the grain, which I don't like to do).

I now live in a place where it is OK to not shave for long periods. So my current method of shaving (which I do roughly once a month) -- use a Wahl peanut trimmer to shave/debulk first, take a bath to soften the hair, use a DE blade to shave, then finish with a quick mach 5 (basically to help shave sensitive areas, for a closer finish, and for some edges eg under the nose/side burns).

I would hop on this deal but with my current shaving habits, my current stockpile of a few mach 5s and 50 DE blades will last until I die. My proraso soap is over 10 years old and I have used about 60% of it.
