There is a good deal of bass but I find the mids and lows to be somewhat boxy and and the lows a bit boomy. There are several sound settings, (vocal, news, music, movies) and it seems like the "news" or "music" settings to me are the best setting without too much bass.
BTW the woofers are on the bottom of the bar, which IMO further hampers the bass when on a shelf. So although the soundbar has feet that lift it up 1/4" off the table, I'd recommend elevating it an inch or two off the table with spacers or something (that's what I did), or even wall mounting it.
If this speaker were for me, it's not bad, but I might not keep it. But it's only $63 and it's for a friend on a budget, so they can decide for themselves. But is it a good buy, a soundbar for a measly $60? I'd say so.
Edit: What the heck, based on comments in this thread and the Yamaha thread, I just ordered the $50 Brandsmart Yamaha refurb. Let's do a head-to-head! (hopefully Friday)

From what I can tell, the JBL does not have a subwoofer-out should you decide you want more bass vs the Yamaha that does.

The Yamaha is the better sounding speaker, it has a cleaner, fuller sound - and if you adjust the woofer volume control, it has some decent bass - but overall it has less bass than the JBL. However the Yamaha has a sub output, so it can be connected to a subwoofer. That might be a good option for this soundbar if you end up wanting more bass.
The JBL does not have a sub output. While it has more bass than the Yamaha, overall it is not as clean sounding, but it still sounds OK. So I'd say the JBL is a good all-in-one solution.
BTW when I say these sound "good" I'm meaning "good for this price range". Of course there are much better soundbars out there, but at $50-$60 these are both good deals.

I might pick up the JBL.
Is there a startup chime from the Yamaha when you switch between the tv speakers to the soundbar during a movie? I got a 2nd 1090 and it keeps making an alert sound when I do that. Might return it and get this walmart one.

Yes there is a fairly loud chime when I turn it on. Odd design choice by Yamaha.

So I mainly use "Movie" or "TV" surround mode. Sometimes I just end up going back to plain old stereo mode.
But yes I always have the Bass Extender on.
