I thought it worth sharing that this version of Turbo Tax Deluxe Software that you download and install will allow you to include capital gains & losses while the Turbo Tax Online version requires you to step up to "Premium" to handle said capital gains & losses. Turbo Tax Online Deluxe does not handle capital gains & losses / investments. I've seen this mentioned in a few places with my recent research here's one example. [intuit.com]

I've read the desktop software will download your information from Turbo Tax Online or your Intuit account if you did your taxes on their web-based interface the previous year once you log into the desktop suite. It's prompted me for this, but I used a tax professional last year. I've also read switching to Turbo Tax Online after using the desktop standalone software will not pull your previous years information. So it works online to desktop, but not desktop to online.
Do not buy this free tax USA is free for federal
Deluxe Desktop version includes Capital Gain. Online version does not include it.

If you have accounts at Fidelity you can get Turbotax for free.
I have a seven figure account at Fidelity and I've never been able to get Turbo Tax for free. I think the criteria for that happening is under some select circumstances like managed accounts. The same goes for IPO's. I signed up for notices, but my account doesn't qualify in spite of the large balance.

This is all backwards. The desktop version is far more powerful, cheaper, shows you the forms whenever you want, allows you to complete multiple returns without paying again, and keeps your data mostly out of the cloud. In addition, desktop deluxe does basically everything, so you don't have to upgrade to premiere - this is definitely not true online. So for about $50, you can do multiple returns and won't get up charged for certain forms or features. This can easily be $150-200 online, depending what forms you need.

Here's a detailed comparison: https://thefinancebuff.com/tax-so...sktop.html
In addition, all you need to import your data from the previous year is import last year's Turbo Tax file. Not sure what footwork the OP is referring to.

I too have seven figures. None of it is managed by anyone but me.

I would recommend reading that thread all the way to the bottom. Apparently Intuit is changing the rules again for the desktop version, you can create the right forms with Schedule D, but you cannot e-file without upgrading to Premium. Upgrading to Premium is also not just paying the difference, although true cost isn't clearly specified in the thread. Since I have stocks/cap gains, according to the Intuit guide on their website, I think I'm stuck with Premier Fed + State: $72.99 + $10 Amazon gc :https://www.amazon.com/Intuit-Tur...B0DN1369KD
I was able to e-file my schedule D utilizing the desktop deluxe version purchased and downloaded from Amazon via this thread. No prompts to upgrade to premium. The software was able to pull my 1099-DIV, -INT, -B from 2 of the 3 entities I have investments with after logging through with their credentials, so I only had to manually enter in one.

I am trying to use FreeTaxUSA for the first time this year (used TurboTax in previous years). As a sanity test, I would like to compare the return amounts to TurboTax by inputting all my data into TT. Does anyone have a federal TT license they can spare (+California would be ideal)? If I recall correctly, TT download provides up to 5 federal returns per license. Happy to trade an Amazon GC worth a few dollars for the trouble. Please send me a DM.
Thanks
