1.5 amp is for smallish batteries or ones you don't mind taking a week to charge. Note that this does not include the lithium mode that you need for some premium motorcycle batteries.
If you have a riding mower, ATV, boat, or anything else that may sit for a month or two without being used this thing will pay for itself within a couple years. I had one of these on my last riding mower and the battery was still kicking after 7 years when I sold the mower. I've had it on my current mower for 2 years and the battery is still going strong. Previously I'd have to replace these small batteries about every 2 years.
I'm picking up a couple more at this price, thanks OP!
If I have a spare car battery sitting in the garage not connected to anything. Do I need something like this? Or the battery will be good

And actually with resistance the 1.5A will be more like 0.75Ah ... At work -- and we have hundreds of batteries - we found that anything less than 5A (rated) was totally useless ...
They're definitely not useless IMO. I use 1.25-1.5amp battery chargers like this for personal use and they work great. They just take more time, sometimes a couple days for a car battery depending on it's size and how low it was. Charging at a low current has advantages, too. I also really like the .750amp battery tender branded units; they keep my powersport batteries and lawn mower batteries charged up well in off seasons.

I have one on my riding mower. I plug it in whenever it's not in use, and I've had batteries that last 7+ years but without using this, they only lasted a couple of years. It works great to keep a battery topped off, which helps to extend the life.
Yeah, that's what I typically get from decent batteries on my mower WITHOUT a maintainer...Not sure what you were doing wrong before, but 5-7 years is pretty normal.

How the mighty have fallen.. This brand used to be king but has given in to consumer demands for cheap products and no longer has the quality that it once did. Shame..
