It will play 98% of games out there, you can't say the same thing for ANY $500 gaming laptop. And for the same price (new vs new $, or used vs used $*) I am not sure there is another handheld gaming PC that outperforms the Steam Deck. So "overpriced"...compared to what? LOL.

And yes, some handheld gaming PC's have better hardware on paper but they tend do still perform worse with Windows' overhead vs the SD running a slim version of Linux. Or you can spend $200-500 more and get something completely incomparable but again we are at the same thing..."overpriced" compared to what?

*I'm sure someone will recount how they once bought a (blah blah blah) on FB marketplace "like new" for 2 cans of soup and $3 so therefore the Steam Deck is oVeRpRiCeD compared to that unicorn. Same thing goes for completely apples to oranges coversations about Best Buy open box deals but at least they come with a warranty and almost no chance of getting shot unlike FB MP.
Very true and I thought the same thing, but there is a lot of value in being able to game portably and play games on my backlog.

It's not really a blue moon sale any more than this is. Plus this is refurbished and gone in minutes whereas you had 2 weeks or so with Best Buy.
Gone within minutes but constantly restocking. The Best Buy deal keeps being referred to in the singular so perhaps even more rare than a literal blue moon that happens 2-3 times a year Wink Honestly shame I missed that sale though...especially the open boxes that may been available.

The asus is the better performer from most reviews I've read.
Mostly single digit FPS differences....sometimes. Other times worse. So at best a wash. The main place where the Windows consoles win is anti-cheat, non-Steam launchers, and if you wanted to semi treat the console like a normal PC Windows can be little less of a learning curve for some users.

You can install bazzite or whatever and then the Os advantage of the steam deck is gone. Then you just compare hardware and…
And you can install CryoUtilities on the Steam Deck to move the needle the other way.

There are definite cons to the ally. But performance is generally the advantage.
Regardless; I feel like we are splitting a lot of hairs to avoid admitting even *if* there is a tiny performance increase in some games the FPS to $ ratio is too close to care about....so again "overpriced" is still meaningless (especially being all the comparisons that keep being used cost the same or more)

Third to using the Steam mobile app to cop the 1TB OLED. It also wasn't showing in stock on the website even with a hard refresh on the page, but just shows up in stock on the mobile app.

For me it ultimately wasnt worth spending more for OLED.

I bought the 64GB LCD refurbished and upgraded the drive. I wanted an OLED just because it was "better", but wasnt sure how much I would use the device.

As it turns out I use my SD as a secondary PC (plugged into a monitor) during the day while I work from home. I browse, watch a video, play a quick game, listen to a book/misic, etc. I play games a few times a week. Sometimes I hook it up to my TV.

I really don't have a good reason to get the OLED. I guess if I was playing significantly every week, I might feel differently.

I picked up an old steam controller that has trackpads. I do like using that with the Deck on my TV.

Which Steam controller did you get? This seems very interesting for my potential setup. Thank you!

Who knows?

Maybe ARM will catch up and they'll use something like the Elite X instead.
I saw that Valve made an ARM version of Proton [tomshardware.com]. I'm not convinced they will ditch x86 and AMD. But if they do, there's new chips coming from Nvidia, MediaTek, and potentially even AMD: the rumored Sound Wave APU [youtu.be] with ARM cores and RDNA graphics.

The original Steam controller. You can find them on eBay. The controller has two large trackpads and one joy stick. If you get one, be aware that you will have to flash the controller with an update if you want bluetooth.

These controllers are essential for playing games that require a mouse from your sofa. I use an XBox controller for other games.
