Are these any good for amateur/ novice music production? Or just for watching movies / playing games?

These speakers do not have a grounded phono pre-amp. Some record players have them built in but you should check to be sure. Sound-wise these are a good deal for the price. IMHO, better than the equivalent Edifier models.

Key features text of this speaker has
"High-quality phono preamplifier for direct connection of a record player with MM magnet system"

Do I need to get anything else to connect these to a turntable to get good sound?

I've got an old receiver with two bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer.

I want speakers to separately connect a desktop PC as well as some synth stuff (midi keyboard + synthstrom deluge) - is there any reason I should consider powered/active monitors like this instead of using what I've got?

Could use a speaker wire subwoofer connection, only using one channel instead of two however bass is is usually across both channels and non directional so not missing anything and if the subwoofer only has RCA input you can use a high level to line level converter which is basically what is inside subwoofers with speaker wire inputs.

There is a GND ground connection next to the phono/line switch!

Nothing else is needed. The speakers have a built in phono preamp and ground connection to use with a turntable without a built in phono preamp. If the turntable has a built in phono preamp then use which ever phono preamp sounds better or the one in the turntable if you need to use a long RCA cable to the speakers.
Which model turntable?

Contact the seller, maybe they will refund the difference, maybe they won't.

If it sounds good, not really. You could argue that the speakers you have now are likely produced to enjoy music, so they affect the sound more so than a studio monitor specifically made to hear what's there, but in actual practice you should be fine to mess around and play. Maybe adjust the eq settings to be flatter if you are actually producing songs, but if it's to mess around and practice and start off writing music etc, it's totally fine. It really has a lot to do with what you already have and your goals, but what you got will work. Good luck and play something!

Edit: Not to say this is a bad deal. Having studio monitors can be useful for different reasons, and these don't seem like they are bad. If it serves you to have both for switching back and forth, there's plenty of worse ways to spend money on your musical hobby or passion, but they won't offer another ability besides to hear your sounds through other monitors than the ones you have. If you didn't, I may suggest them more strongly. It's totally possible that the speakers and receiver are old but high quality, or complete trash worthy of replacing. Only you can decide.
