I look for bottom line value and for $18 I can get my state and federal filed with federal filed by efile and state mailed. With FreeTax USA I can not even print out a state and have to pay the $15 which gets us to about the same price.
Yet at that point is where the value of Block come in and I find it much more worthwhile. I can split cost with my son and other family members and get cost down to $3 to get five federal and states filed. To do that at Freetax it is going to be $75 and entail creating five accounts on a site that may or may not be there in the future.
With Block my data and return are accessible to me at all times and stored locally on my machine. If I make a mistake I can amend a return for free. If I have some glitch I can at least maybe get someone on the phone. I'm assured that I can get to my data anytime and I can play with tax scenarios by creating test returns. If I was entrepreneurial I could even offer to do friends and family returns for a convenience fee and make some pocket cash.

Look, there are pros and cons to every product and there's not a single best for every situation, especially with the various tax software options. They all have certain forms that aren't supported (or at least not well supported). They have slightly different features.
Different people have different priorities and preferences too. How important is local vs online software? Or state e-file? Or ability to do multiple returns? Brokerage import? Everyone will answer differently.
I think one thing we can agree on is that the *online* versions of HR Block and TurboTax offer the least value and the most upsells.
I will also note that FreeTaxUSA/Tax Hawk has been around for over 20 years, so I don't think you need to worry about them disappearing. You can of course save a PDF locally for backup purposes.

FreeTaxUSA($15) can be counted right in with the online services like TaxHawk, Block , Taxcut and TT and almost all online services that advertise a "free" tier for you to only find out it is not. They have little value at the free tier and are a ripoff when you start paying. Free online versions including FreetaxUSA($15) are a ripoff compared to installed versions. Online you are the product and they are all about upselling. Your return and data are not yours and I do not understand why some try to guide people them as they are not deal in any sense of the term.
All are just big corporate tax companies that like to make money. When I hand my money to a corporation I like to get as much value per dollar spent and these installed versions by far and by any metric have the most value and that is why I recommend the product this deal is about It has known costs right up front that can be calculated versus sending somebody to website where who knows what it will end up costing or what they will be sold.
You better download that return as there does appear to be changes coming and there is talk of totally shutting down most personal tax returns. A smaller company like TaxHawk is not going to be able to keep websites up and running just so you can come back to your return. We may finally be free from having to pay someone to help us to simplify the terribly complicated tax system that previous congresses and administrations have left us.

Oh Don, I've missed you buddy. It was so cordial around here for a while. Anyway, TaxHawk and FreeTaxUSA are the same company - that's no secret, it's at the bottom of every page on their site. They have been around for 23 years. They make it crystal clear that federal is free and state is $15. You are not the product as they don't sell your information per IRS rules. You make these claims with zero evidence.

Blocks marketing has confused countless people here that don't realize that efile of the state is not included. Don't get me started on the premium vs deluxe upsell. Their online version is even more deceptive. Let's not forget how they DID sell your information to Meta/Facebook despite IRS rules, leading to multiple lawsuits and a congressional investigation.

I wouldn't count on our income tax system going away any time soon, but I wouldn't complain if it did!
