Check out the NAScompares channel on YouTube, he's likely done a deep drive on that model with transcoding tests in Plex, and you can also learn what's new on the incoming 2025 models (basically just 2.5GbE)
I have this exact NAS and it works great for my Plex server and as a photo backup replacement instead of paying Google. I recommend it, but I've already outgrown the 2 bays in a little over a year, FYI
DS923+ is also on sale at BH. Waiting for the 1522+ to go on sale 😬

I have this model. It's a metal case and works perfectly for Plex.

Additionally, while Synology says the max ram is 4gb. it's actually 18gb (2gb onboard + 16gb SODIMM).
Oh didn't know that, I figured the whole line up was plastic. Hardware is still out dated for the price

I've had the 224+ for a year now and it's been perfect in my home. No issues with using it as a NAS (w/Dual WD Red 8TB drives, and a 16GB memory upgrade) for Audio and Video on my network.

Would this be good for a Plex server?
It's ok. I stuck another stick of ram in mine, was really cheap. I use it like another responder said, back up my photos and run my Plex server on it. It does really well for that purpose. I at two 8TB drives that I put it in and I've got it as a redundent backup. Synology does a good job of updating their stuff. I think I'd get it again but I think I paid less than this about 2 or 3 years ago.

Just when you think two bays is enough you realize that you need four bays. Just get the 4-bay.
Of course, if you have the money. Double the price for the drives and considerably more for the NAS.

No... if you a true Plex user. Probably ok for a user on LAN.

get the 4-bay version now (if you have the money). you can start with just 2 drives.
expansion to more (or larger) drives are easier with 4-bays.

Did they add nvme storage option to any of these or are they all still on nvme for cache only. Because I remember an option available for business users to use it. Also any idea if they fixed plex real time 4k transcoding on any of these devices. I remember there being an issue or license or configuration issue with h265

Ugreen hardware blows Synology out of the water. The OS is not as polished but seems to be improving, you can run just about anything in docker so no big deal, Also if you don't like the stock OS you can run whatever one you want on it unlike Synology.

So you need to buy synology's inflated nvme drives to get the full cache and volume features? Is it better to upgrade ram instead if on a limited budget? For the Ds923+

Most people don't want to be assed messing with their NAS O/S. And for most people, the Synology O/S is more than enough to meet their needs. I would not recommend the Ugreen NAS to anyone because the people that it would suit would be able to decide for themselves. You know, the type of people who can tell you what Docker is.
