No comment on these specific units but if you're having problems with mold on any AC, you should just turn it to fan mode for 20m or so before shutting off.

All AC's work by transferring heat from one side of the unit to the other side, as part of this process the coils on the inside of the room will be ice cold (so they can absorb the heat in the room and move it to the outside) moisture will condense on the cold coils, it will then drip down in the pan and be directed outside, that's why AC's always dribble water on the outside.

If you shut the unit off there will be a lot of moisture, all over the coils and in the pan. That moisture be food for mold in the right climates..

To avoid this, run it on the fan mode before turning it off, this will dry the unit out and avoid the mold issues
You do lose efficiency doing that. Most, if not all, are designed to hold a certain level/amount of water. They do this intentionally so the outdoor fan will "spray" the water on the outdoor coils, which helps with efficiency by cooling them down.
YMMV, I just spray it all down with coil cleaner, blower wheel and all, spray it with a brand new clean water pump up sprayer after 10 minutes and put a fan on it to dry everything out thoroughly. I use mine in Florida continuously. Way easier than disassembling everything. I maintain 4 of them doing this exact technique. I should do a youtube video of me doing mine, but I am sure it could potentially break the unit one day. So far, 12-15 cleanings later, their all going strong, and clean too.
BTW: This air conditioner 12k uses nearly the same amount of energy as the 8k and idles down to 95W or so when cooling minimally. The 8K Idled back about the same cooling minimally. The main difference is that the 12K can ramp up to using 780W or so while the 8K maxed out at like 460W.

I bought both 12k and 8K the 8K is very underpowered. I'd just go straight with the 12K. 8K for me should cover 2 bedroom as well my older 5K did that with no problems. The newer 8K barely keeps up. But the 12K in the living room works well.

purchased this exact unit last year during this sale, except my girlfriend is no help, so after setting it up on a third floor window by myself I made the executive decision to just leave it hanging in between the window all through an ohio winter and now spring.

Will report back on its durability and and if it was a terrible idea. Speaking of terrible ideas my scooter with dual 1000W motors just arrived last night, so I can't wait to go barrelling down the road at 40-50 miles on it, thanks slick deals

I have two 8K units about to enter their 4th summer of service and a 12K entering it's 3rd with 0 problems whatsoever. I live in a part of VA where it's not too dry, not too humid, so I've never had to clean anything other than the filter. Now that we have another kid, I'll need to shuffle around the units to dedicate one to his bedroom, so I'll buy another 12K one now for the downstairs. We considered minisplits for our 100+ year home, but these do the trick for waaay cheaper.

FYI, there is a newer version of the MIdea U-Shaped air conditioners that addresses some of the problems mentioned in this thread. Home Depot sells them. The have part numbers with a 'U' in it instead of a 'V'. Like MAW12U1QWT, for example.

They have capacitive buttons and a chrome trim strip on the front.

The newer versions have a drain plug, have a 'Flash Cool' mode and seem to do a better job actually reaching their rated capacity, and also support Matter for smart home integration. They're also a little bit more expensive.

We have a few of the 8K versions and it's basically central air conditioning for a tiny fraction of the price.

Just bought in store from Costco with "V". Box says Matter support. Picture shows non-physical push buttons on the front, could be capacitive. Haven't opened box until price adjustment in a few days so can't confirm if drain plug exists. Another poster on this thread said they received one with drain plug from previous Costco purchase.

Does the box indicate having the "Flash Cool" feature?

No. Don't see flash cool feature and no silver trim. Online manual for this exact model shows a drain plug so hope it's there.

These are amazing little units. It's basically like a baby mini-split that goes in your window. The window comes down between the front evaporator section and the rear compressor section, keeping the noise out. And since it's an inverter compressor, it's super efficient. It actually doesn't matter too much if you have a unit that's over-sized for the space because instead of the compressor short-cycling like would happen with a standard AC unit, it just ratches down the pace of the compressor to meet the load.
IMHO these are worth the cost!

I would be be careful if you were going to use this for a bedroom. I don't find mine to be as quiet as advertised.
That said, it works well otherwise and looks better than most window units

It's because it's an inverter unit. It will throttle the fan and compressor to maintain a consistent temperature instead of turning on and off. So it may peak out at 1100W but once has cooled the zone it will draw less power to maintain it. That's why some people are saying 500-700W to maintain a zone.
Yes, I know but my unit will pull 1100w until it cools room down and may show 1100 even later at times as I may run it concurrent with my central air unit. The peak may need to be considered for portable generator capacities.

Will Costco.Com have the same price - it says "+Costco.Com" in the ad. Will it always be higher than store price?

In past sales, the online price has been $20 higher.
Picking the unit up at the warehouse is highly preferable, as these are not packaged properly for UPS handling and delivery.

Rather than drill holes, I take a paper towel and fold it into a 2" x 6" strip, then tuck one of the narrow ends of the towel between the frame and the fins so it touches the accumulating water. The water just wicks right out and drips out of the other end of the towel. I usually put a plant underneath it so it gets continually drip irrigated.

Can you provided a picture when you can of how you do it?

If I get one it's going on the 2nd floor in a bonus room above the garage, so this method would be quite tricky.

Would like to see you do this with a video also

My 12 and 8 both had mold on the fan blades; used a metal gun barrel brush and a vacuum cleaner together to brush loose the grunge...
