Depending on the batch creation date and location, I find basically any nationwide soil brand to wildly vary in composition. It can contain more or less "sticks", which is "composted forest product" which is decomposed mulch. Some bags have mostly rich black soil. So because I have some time and don't have access to have yards of soil dumped because I live in a downtown of a major city, I'll buy soil like this when it goes on sale on multiple locations and even multiple pallets in the same store. They all can be different, it's just how it goes with commercial bagged soil at this scale and being able to sell it for two dollars. The bags that are a little too mulchy get sealed up and stacked in my backyard in the open. By next year things will have composted down further and turn more soil like.

Also weird little orange balls/seeds/eggs is a common complaint across the board for MG soil, it's just coated fertilizer.
When I sifted the first couple bags I got from ace hardware, I found a piece of glass, a two inch rock, many small stones, pieces of brick, plastic shreds, weird little orange spherical seeds, and so many sticks that I maybe got 40% soil to be generous, and tossed the rest to my compost pile. It is only worth buying if you're dead broke and can spend the time sifting the various garbage out. not to mention all the tomatoes I've grown in this stuff look TERRIBLE and are losing leaves left and right. really not even sure if they'll survive.
Paid about $6 per 40 quart bag at Sam's recently...that's about 1.55 cu ft so this is a good price. The soil in the bag was nice and black...no issues

Ace Hardware deal was better at $2.50 a bag which was 1.5 CF.
That deal ended last month. Right now HD has the slickest price available today (~$0.30 lower than Lowe's SpringFest sale price).

Edit: also the Ace deal was 1 cu.ft. like above poster says. Doing the math, I think Lowe's has the better price per cu. ft. And it's available right now.

Lowe's has 1 cu ft Sta green soil for $2.24. Price is better compared to Miracle grow. Is it better than Miracle grow soil?

I use this as my cheap potting soil. I sift out some of the big chunks, mix in a bit of perlite to provide aeration and better drainage. And it works well for most of my potted plants

Unless it was a different deal, the recent one was 1cuft. Still slightly better deal than this, but not by much. I got 25 bags 2 weeks ago

That is strange. I buy a cart full of this same soil every year for past 6 years. I've never had a problem with a bag before.

I'm torn between buying 8 bags of .75 miracle grow, 6 cu ft for $16. Or buying 3 cu ft of top soil and 3 cu ft of steer manure compost for $16.02. They come out to nearly the same price. Either way I would be adding perlite and amendments. Just wary of MG soil having had a good amount of sticks and plastic in previous bags.

Just out of curiosity, why perlite and not vermiculite? I am guessing it is based on geography, a wet climate maybe?
