This is an incredibly flexible and rugged tool for athletes engaged in nearly any activity including running, hiking, scuba diving, golfing, and skydiving. It has nearly all the functionality of the fenix 8, and it's unlikely to be bricked by the next software update to "fix" or "enhance" functionality. Oh, yeah, and at this price it costs half of a similarly configured fenix 8. Folks considering purchasing this watch have not lost their minds; they are simply Slick Dealers who know what they want. If it's not the watch for you, so be it. It is the watch for someone, though.
thankfully.. it's not a smartwatch.. it's a sport watch for endurance athlete.

Still have my 6x, which has been through wars.. Full IM's. I'll keep using it until I see some pressing reason to upgrade. Still waiting..

You are mistaken. I wore garnin foremans for many many years. At one point they finally started storing music. I swapped to a fenix as no other watch will track Open water swimming. The fenix is the default watch for triathletes bc of the battery life and tracking while swimming (not pool laps). Garmin focuses very specifically on endurance athletes and performance analytics. Apple focuses on.. well.. teens. Thus why the slew of smartphone features, integration with their ecosystem etc. The only time most connect their Garmin with their phone is to synch data uploaded to strava. Oh. Sometimes I update my music library. Once I used Garmin pay too!

My cult membership requires I object to the "for teens" barb… The Apple Watches aim to be tiny nascent iPhones, which means that I can go for an hour-long run with music, receive a text to grab something from the store, Apple Pay at said store, run halfway back, take an EKG when I suddenly feel lightheaded, and unlock my car to drive home once I've trudged up at a walk… all from a 42 mm watch. Yes, the battery would die a third of the way into an ultramarathon, but so would I. Mischaracterizing the design goals as targeting only Zoomers is equivalent to scoffing that Garmin's line relies on buttons over touchscreens—it's for good reasons, and ignoring that just makes you sound stupid!

Garmin just locked features behind "garmin+"
Ill never buy another garmin product again
They are locking some -new- features behind a paywall, but existing features will remain free. This is not an Oura 2 to Oura 3 situation. Annoying? Yes. But not flagrant.

I understand that position. I'm sure in 2-3 years time, they will go the full subscription route and the free tier will start getting choked out with actual updates and new features.

Any reason to think the Enduro 3 will be discounted this year?
Still rocking an old Enduro. Battery is holding up. Do you have the older version?

Solar is gimmick, not really useful. I'd say go for AMOLED display.
If you're out cycling or running and using your watch, the solar feature is incredibly useful. My cousin running Ironman's uses her watch for the entire race (around 13-14 hours) and it doesn't die specifically because of this feature. You don't know what you're talking about.

Bought this watch last September for $499 on Woot. Everything is great except for the Heart Rate sensor. It's hit or miss unless I tighten the hell out of it against my skin while bike riding. I've had better HR monitoring on a gen1 Venu. Build quality is excellent, and the built in flashlight is very, very handy. I use it every day and is easier than taking your phone out and navigating to the flashlight.
It's best to use it on the underside of your wrist if you're exercising with it on and not using any other HRM. It'll give you a better, more accurate data. However, nothing beats a chest strapped HRM. Give it a try, though, you won't be disappointed.

You should be able to use GPS on this watch for well over 24 hours without needing solar. You might be able to run the entire weekend on GPS (just turn off the music).

?
I am not that guy, but i have been using epix 2 for a long time, with always on feature.

here is what the spec says for 47 mm version:

Default Settings (Display Always-On)
Smartwatch Mode: Up to 6 days
GPS Only: Up to 30 hours
All Satellite Systems: Up to 24 hours
All Satellite Systems + Multi-band (sapphire only): Up to 15 hours
All Satellite Systems + Music: Up to 9 hours

and i am getting about that.

you shouldn't have any issue doing 15 hours with that watch. and if you do, just turn off the always on feature.
