Is this some sort of expansion kit or just the original kit that's been updated? Also, are the pieces interchangeable with the old kits (would be idiotic if they werent)

This is a base unit. If your kid already has the SC100 there will be duplication of those instructions/components. Of course, Elenco doesn't really offer upgrade kits as it has done in the past, so arguably the SC300 is just as reasonable a first purchase as the SC100.

Note that the go-to price for the SC100 used to be around $20, though these days the price regularly floats around $30. As such, the price for the SC300 here is reasonable but certainly not a bargain. Finding these in good shape via craigslist/FB can be trivial depending upon your area (though some components can be fragile, so definitely inspect certain items such the battery holder for evidence of exploded alkalines).

Good luck!
Jon

Those were awesome! You know you're getting old if you remember TechAmerica. Radio Shack was an amazing store before cell phones took over.

Yes we have 2 of the base kits. Kids quickly went through all the indicated projects and now just cobble random stuff togehter.
