I googled and it seems Target started selling "real" levi's a few years back. I have been waiting for the price to drop on these via ebay, and they finally did . I believe those "lower quality" ones you are describing may have been the Denizen variety, but as for the deal post here, I don't know for sure. But they do have free returns.

You can search their store for other listings for Levi's jeans. I found my size that way. I'm not sure what the difference is for the "Levi's Men's 505 Mid Rise Regular Fit Straight Leg Full Fit Jeans" listings though.
