That's not to say a $5 probe isn't all some people need. Just that if you spend real time in the kitchen cooking, ~$75 (on sale) isn't all that much for a faster and reliable tool.

That is very hefty increase in price to pay to shave a few seconds off a temperature reading. The world survived and good food got cooked with.analog thermometers and often with none. Being off a degree is not life shattering and even this cheap one can be calibrated. Getting a temperature reading in a second or two is not a critical need in any way shape or form. I have had cheap accurate enough thermometers last many many years. Giving the granddaughter or charity $95 will bring more joy and good to the world than the warm feeling about my fien taste in thermometers and need for instant readings.
