This is much different from a PSP -- It's basically a "Screen+Controller" combination, it needs an active internet connection to really do anything.

There are a couple ways to use it:
If you have a PS5, you can "remote play" (stream games from your PS5 to it -- n your home, at work, etc..)
If you don't want to use a PS5, you can Stream from the internet if you have a PS+ subscription (some of these are PS1 games, some are modern games). No PS5 required, it runs off the 'cloud' and streams to your portal in real time letting you play games from the internet.

There is no built in storage, so no MP3 Player, Browser, games.. it's essentially useless if there is no internet connection.

It's an interesting device. I don't get any lag at all with it. The fact it can run play PS5 games is a big advantage over being stuck to portable-games powered by the handheld itself. I use it at my desk when I work (from home) to do little things like grind in games between tasks.. It's also useful if you want to play a game but someone else is using the TV (if that's an issue) or if you just want to keep your game going while taking a dump.

With that said, where it kind of fumbles are if you have a poor internet connection it can lag.. and for most big PS5 games, you'll want to play them on a big TV with a sound system and not a 7" streaming device. I wouldn't want to play "The last of us 3" on this, but I wouldn't mind playing Tetris or re-playing The Last of Us on it for a 5th time.
If you pay for their subscription service where you can stream some games you can play those (and only those) remotely over wifi
Mine disconnects from my PS5 and is basically unplayable most of the time. Very frustrating. I have 1 gig Verizon fios internet and Amazon eero with 3 stations. Every other WiFi item works in my house no problem with good speeds and no dropouts.

I bought a used PSVR 2 from Amazon, and aside from the box being thrashed, the unit was flawless. I've had it almost a year and it's working great. A lot of this stuff is returned just because people get buyer's remorse. Every now and then I get the itch to get a Portal, but I know it would just go the way of my Kindle. I'd use it for a month or two and then it would sit in one spot, with a dead battery, for the next 2 years.

Proceed with caution. I've had 2 of these things with stiff drift. There is no repair for these so you're SOL if(when) the stick drift comes in. Stored mine in a carry case after the first replacement Sony sent. Still came with little to no use.
I haven't had any issues with stick drift on my portal (or on any Playstation consoles, for that matter), but I have seen people saying that the Portal analog sticks can 'easily' be swapped out (or upgraded to better/hall effect switches). I say 'easily' as it's all just screws holding it together, not soldered points.

unfortunately i had the same problem and ended up returning mine as well. i had my ps5 connected via ethernet, wifi 5ghz set to a channel that dont have any interference from my neighbors, but still had constant connection problems on the portal. oddly enough, the PS remote play app worked much much better on my smart phones.

I just got one recently. I'm glad something like this is offered because I can't play all the games I want to play as I have very young kids at home. Games nowadays are filled with profanity and sexual references, which means I can't play with my kids around. Also everytime I start up the PS5, they want to play Astro or something and so I never really get to play for leisure on my own. The PS Portal has solved that, I now get to play privately on my own away from the big tv so they can't bother me lol. So much for the big screen with surround sound system and all. I only have 2 complaints about the Playstation Portal, a) the network lag is quite frustrating, but i have a terrible wifi setup at home anyways b) i wish the screen could be tilted a few degrees up or down. I feel it could benefit comfort by letting player be able to tilt slightly to their comfort. I have been buying more "digital" verions of games since purchase as opposed to physical copies as I used to. With a physical copy, you need to have the disc inside the PS5 to play it. Sucks if you're away from the console. Digital games you can just start playing, no issues.

You need to hardwire your ps5 to the router, and before beginning a play session you need to turn airplane mode on then off or else it disconnects every 20 minutes.

I read the manual to mean on the same wifi network in the home, so I haven't taken it with me on a trip. It would be great if it worked at a hotel (assuming the internet doesn't completely blow). Thanks for putting this out there, now I'll try it on my next trip.
it will work outside the home so long as you have a good net connection to connect to.

When did you return it tho. It was super laggy at launch. But since about 6 months ago with updates it got a lot better. Also heavily dependent on your home network setup
ive watched my brother use his with literally no lag. the patches eventually fixed that issue.

I bought one for $150 and returned it. I'd rather pay more for the new PSP.

I still stare at my Vita sitting in front of my 3D PlayStation monitor the past several years from time to time.

I charged it the other day and piddled around on NFS for a bit to get me sleepy enough to go to bed. Forgot I had a password on it.

I'm wondering the same. But recent reviews of PS Remote Play app are really bad. I wonder how much longer Sony will support that app to be used on G Cloud.
