My son and I are currently in this book (we are listening to the audio book though). My son (14 years old) loves it. It was described to me as Top Gun in space. Definitely worth the $2.

I just finished this series. It's very good. But it's really young adult genre. Just be aware of that.

A couple of notes -
1. If you read the series, don't skip out on the 3 novellas. They are not really adjoining side stories. They are integral to the main plot.

2. It is highly recommended that you read the books in this order — Skyward, Starsight, Sunreach (novella), Redawn (novella), Cytonic (but stop at the epilogue; do not read it), Evershore (novella), and then read the Cytonic epilogue. Then you can read the two optional short stories I mentioned below. Then finally read Defiant.

The novellas are very well written. The Cytonic epilogue spoils major events in Evershore. Thankfully, I was aware of this recommendation and so didn't read the epilogue in Cytonic before Evershore. And I was glad I didn't.

3. If you want, you can read the short story 'Defending Elysium' after Cytonic. It is free on Brandon Sanderson's website.

The audiobook is also free on a podcast — StarShipSofa episode 339. Just search for the podcast in the podcast app of your preference. It's easy to find.

You can also read the short story 'HyperThief' after Cytonic.

4. If you prefer audiobooks, the 4 main entries are exclusive to Audible. But you can easily find the novellas in the digital collection of many public libraries (via Libby/Overdrive). Also, all of these ebooks may be found in the digital collection of many libraries.
