that is the stupidest reason to get a less powerful device if the price is the same.
If they're around the same price, I'd cancel the 9600x and get this one. You can always tune this to draw less power, but you cannot tune the 9600x up if you need the performance in the future. 9900x effectively doubles the multicore performance, it's not even close. Also the mobo here is much, much better than the b650 plus. Even if you never use 9900x capabilities, eventually its the resale value will be higher.

Is this better than some of the Microcenter bundles?

Also, I noticed that the CPU doesn't come with a cooler. I have a 10 yr old processor right now so I'm guessing this is the standard these days that CPU coolers are separate?
It's definitely in that same ballpark... it's all going too come down to the motherboard quality (not just the chipset version - not all mobos are created equal):

$499

$569

As long as this specific Asus mobo isn't a problematic model, the NewEgg deal is rock solid. I haven't done any homework on this motherboard or the ones MC is bundling to compare their relative merits.

Wish I had. Seems like this combo wasn't available for long.

Ordered. Time to upgrade my 2700X. I was going to pull the trigger on the 265k deal the other day but waited too long.

Dammit I missed out on this one... Ended up getting the 9600X for 185 bucks at Amazon and the B850M board with the free 32GB 3400 CL36 combo from Newegg last night and I believe that deal is still up. I was going to return it and get this one but I was flying all day today... It's 150 bucks cheaper after taxes, but the X870 board was sweet with USB 4 and Wi-Fi 7... Oh well...

I mean to defend him, this will outlast the 9600X and cheaper motherboard both in the fact that it's built better and that it's significantly faster so more future proof...again, for the same price. And faster at everything not just gaming, any sort of computing work that uses all cores this will CRUSH the 9600X.

If I see another deal like this I will jump on it and return the unopened components to Amazon.

Not a great option, but if you are only using 1 or 2 M.2 slots you can get an M.2 to SATA adapter. Here's a Newegg Orico [newegg.com] for $26.
I'm going to go with the MC bundles regardless, superior motherboard IMO (4 SATA, much better PCIe/M.2 options). And likely the 9950x at $599.
Regarding these cheap PCIe-to-SATA adapters (in this case physically in a M.2 form factor), I'd be wary of them. I've had multiple ones show read/write errors on hard drives that I've root caused to the adapter and not the hard drive itself. Of course, these were bargain bin Chinese eBay sellers. I've since moved to HBA SAS adapters (as most homelab folks will recommend) and those have never failed.
