For noobs.
You have to check your Motherboard spec.
1. Using this may disable some of your SATA ports.
2. It may also cause your PCIe x16 slots to run at x8 or x4 speeds. x8 is acceptable, but x4 is not recommended for your graphics card, as it could cut performance in half (e.g., 200 FPS → 100 FPS).
3. Additionally, your 10Gb NIC may operate at reduced speeds—5Gb, 2.5Gb, or even 1Gb—instead of the full 10Gb.

Might want to get one of these with the rear cutouts on the pcb if you're worried about overheating.

I was going to order it using my Amazon business account. The regular price for business customers was a few bucks lower. I did not expect the coupon to actually apply. But it did. $10 total shipped and delivered to my office.

I am glad to be living in a time when this is possible. At least for a little while longer, until tariffs fully kick in.

I am using one of these in an older Dell desktop that currently functions as a home lab server. I can't vouch for the reliability of this adapter since I've only been using it for a couple of months, but so far it's been working great. I currently have a gen 3 drive in it, and heat doesn't seem to be an issue.

In an older PC you still need a SATA drive to boot from, but after boot Proxmox immediately saw the new NVMe drive and let me use it to host virtual machines. Since I don't have a video card in that box, it is a good use of PCIe slots to expand the storage, especially if you don't have a lot of spare SATA ports.

I did test the transfer speed with this adapter, and it was quite a bit faster than SATA, which is useful when you run multiple VMs on the same drive.

Just my 2c.

How do I know if my mobo is compatible without creating one of the side effects you've listed? I have an MSI Pro Z790-S Wifi DDR5.

It has the following: My GPU is in the first slot, would I be able to use
PCI_E1: PCIe 5.0 x16 (From CPU)
PCI_E2: PCIe 3.0 x1 (From Z790 chipset)
PCI_E3: PCIe 3.0 x16 (From Z790 chipset) (says x4 in the manual but it's a x16 slot)
PCI_E4: PCIe 3.0 x1 (From Z790 chipset)
PCI_E5: PCIe 3.0 x1 (From Z790 chipset)

I have to open my salvaged server to see if it has an open port for this, I really want to get a boot NVME SSD in it.

Also some older motherboards won't boot from PCIe adapters if try install windows on it unless use a custom firmware.

Its going to depend on what you have populated and the specific board. You look like you'll be fine using the PCI_E3.

The pins available does not make it a x16. That just means it can take a full length card. Manual says x4 and spec sheet says x16. Doesn't really matter here as you can only use x4 from the adapter.

I only recommend these for semi-old computers. Some MOBOs won't recognize them from my experience or require you to mess with the BIOS to get them to show. But they have been super convenient.

So would this work if I just wanted to expand my computers storage?

Very true
It also depends on your chipset on how different setups effect pci lines
For instance on my 870 board the graphics pci and the m2 a work nice together with no performance issues. If you populate m2 b or m2 c you lose the lanes. M2 d transfer data directly through the chipset and does not affect the PCI lanes but is inherently slower. Gigabyte manuals seem to explain this in plain English. Some other boards don't include these details

Are the cheap (before tariffs) AliExpress versions of these adapters fire hazards? I picked one up for $3, but I haven't used it yet. I am using an M2 SATA version and it works great, and boots into Libreelec (Linux).

It sure does! Wink
"Does a meme adapter plugged into the graphics card pci affect pci lanes
Plugging any device (including a so-called "meme adapter") into a PCIe slot on your motherboard can affect PCIe lane allocation, but the impact depends on your motherboard's design, how many devices are installed, and which slots you use."
