Pharmacist here. I prefer loratadine as it's slightly less anticholinergic than cetirizine. For chronic use loratadine is less drying (eyes, mouth), and less likely to affect memory, cognition than cetirizine. Whatever you do, stay far away from Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for regular use. Risks there are very well established.
The government (e.g. military, FDA) has an ongoing program called SLEP [wikipedia.org]which evaluates effectiveness of drugs past expiration. by in large most drugs are still "good" WELL past their official expiration.

https://www.mayoclinicproceedings...9/fulltext

Cantrell et al,5 in another study, tested medications that had expired 28 to 40 years earlier that were discovered unopened and in their original containers at a retail pharmacy. Twelve of the 14 active ingredients were present in at least 90% of the labeled amount, meeting our standard of acceptable minimum potency. Given these data, it seems that many labeled expiration dates do not reflect true longevity.

Now would I take drugs years old? Not preferably, but for something like this where the worst that would happen is you get some allergy symptoms, sure.
How are you gonna use 1800 tabs before expiration

You don't need to buy 5 of the same item. You just have to buy 5 items from the 7 pages of approved items to get $30 off.

For something available that cheap, I'd replace it. There are some drugs that degrade into toxic substances with heat and time. For most medication 2years is my cut off, but you could go more/less, depending on scenario
There's no drug that says to store it in a hot place. Follow the directions and it should last many, many years.

For allergies, likely not. They may not work as well, but should still do the job even years after expiry. I wouldn't do that for more important stuff like BP, diabetes, etc.

There's a lot of evidence that loratadine (Claritin) just does work as well as Cetirizine (Zyrtec) for the general population. If it works for you great, but don't just blindly stock up.

Aller-Tec is $11.49 and presumably gets the same 5 item discount.

Daily Loratadine has pretty much ended my horrible allergies. I have heard that it works much better for some than others. This is my preferred brand as it's US made unlike other generics that come from India, etc.

Thanks for sharing. I keep Benadryl on hand, but avoid taking it as much as possible. Same for Ibuprofen. Both work wonders but have their risks. May I ask your thoughts on occasional (a few times a year) use of Sudafed or Claritin-D during allergy season?

Ultimately you have to find what works best for you. I've had seasonal allergies (mostly sinus, eyes) for about 15 years. took a couple years to find the best combo (claritin/pataday/flonase), due to the fact that it takes several days for the meds to build up in your system AND the fact that allergies in general just take awhile to calm down (if you remove yourself from the allergen). Then a few years later the claritin started to wane, so I was on zyrtec. After a few years the zyrtec would make me very tired so now I'm on allegra [all generics of course]. Each has its own side effect profile - and I am wondering if the allegra is causing some side effects one wouldn't normally associate with allergy meds.

At any rate, see what works for you before buying a decade's supply./

Do you guys own summer camps for kids or something. Nearly 2,000 pills seems like a lot for the average household 🤣

Do you have to buy all five items at once?
I just realized I've gotten at least one item so far.

Yes. It means that the company that makes them does not have any more stability data the expiry date. Likely ~3 years post manufacturing date. They cant guarantee the potency of the active ingredient or its efficacy past the date.

Just bought a few of these for family at Costco in-warehouse without the bulk discount. Some packs had expiration dates listed for this October and some had expiration dates for summer of next year. Just had to dig around.

Going to reorder and wait for these to come, and then return the packs that had the upcoming expiration dates.
