Pharmacist here. I prefer loratadine as it's slightly less anticholinergic than cetirizine. For chronic use loratadine is less drying (eyes, mouth), and less likely to affect memory, cognition than cetirizine. Whatever you do, stay far away from Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for regular use. Risks there are very well established.
The government (e.g. military, FDA) has an ongoing program called SLEP [wikipedia.org]which evaluates effectiveness of drugs past expiration. by in large most drugs are still "good" WELL past their official expiration.

Cantrell et al,5 in another study, tested medications that had expired 28 to 40 years earlier that were discovered unopened and in their original containers at a retail pharmacy. Twelve of the 14 active ingredients were present in at least 90% of the labeled amount, meeting our standard of acceptable minimum potency. Given these data, it seems that many labeled expiration dates do not reflect true longevity.

Now would I take drugs years old? Not preferably, but for something like this where the worst that would happen is you get some allergy symptoms, sure.
How are you gonna use 1800 tabs before expiration

I used allergy eye drops that expired in 2017 today. 😂Worked great.
I use medications that expired many years ago regularly, but I wouldn't use eye drops that are expired. The sterility is at risk, and having an eye infection that could potentially lead to blindness isn't worth it, however low that risk may be. Ibuprofen that's 10 years old? Sure.

There's a lot of evidence that loratadine (Claritin) just does work as well as Cetirizine (Zyrtec) for the general population. If it works for you great, but don't just blindly stock up.Aller-Tec is $11.49 and presumably gets the same 5 item discount.
It really depends on what works for whom. I need to take Cetirizine every day to prevent hives. Loratidine does not work for that. But when seasonal allergies start, my daily Cetrizine does not help with that and I need to take Loratidine too to help with that. Funny how two symptoms need two of these.

Does anyone know how costco would calculate a refund for returning a couple of these? Would they divide the total price by 5 to determine the per-unit refund amount? Or would you get nothing back because then you wouldn't have been eligible for the $45 off?
Typically its prorated amongst all the items. In this case, divide by 5 if they are all equal price.

And what are these established risks? Because there are no established risks that go beyond any other over the counter drug.

Do you have to buy all five items at once?
I just realized I've gotten at least one item so far.

They give you 365 days between purchases. Go slow no rush.

Since this thread is about antihistamines , I just bought Pataday drop tiny bottle for the eyes, for $25 talk about robbery. With that being said, any cheaper options that is basically the same as Pataday eye drops?

3 bottles is $38 and is one drop per eye per day.

Does the expiration date on medicine really mean anything?

I'm sure all chemicals lose effectiveness over time, but Ill be damned if Im throwing out pills that have been stored in a cool dry place after a year.
