Bought this on a previous SD just to give it a try. it rivals short grain 'sticky-ish" rice made with my Zojirushi rice maker. Quality is much better than I expected.

What happened? Was there a drought or some kind of disaster?

This is good rice. Good to keep at the office for when I don't have time to meal prep. Eat it with some frozen Costco meatballs and you have a filling meal to keep the hanger away.

More like mismanagement. There was a bad harvest in 2023 and subsequent hoarding. One bad year shouldn't create a crisis but government incentives limit domestic rice production for...reasons. But currently, it seems people are hoarding rice the same way you'd play the stock market game, holding out as the prices keep rising, create scarcity so they can sell high

FYI, this is regular sushi rice, not real "sticky rice". Real sticky rice in Asia is usually used for deserts, e.g. Mango and Sticky rice in Thai food.

Also the best rice to make fried rice is long grain rice which is less sticky. IMHO, Sushi rice is the best for steamed rice, much better than long grain rice.

Not sure why you're downvoted, so I upvoted.
Rice comes in a range of "stickiness," with Jasmine rice used for daily meals in Vietnam and I believe Thailand, on the low end and sticky rice as you've described on the high end. Korean rice and Japanese rice used daily are in between somewhere and sushi rice even higher on the glutinous scale. Rice preference is personal taste of course but I see where you're coming from.
Probably the sushi sticky rice labeling is for the uninitiated.
