given how hard it has been to find top gpu's anywhere close to msrp, how does this deal compare to a self built desktop for the patient buyer trying to piece together a system?

I realize "nobody can know" is the real answer to that question, but for the sake of discussion (and to help me decide if a pre-built is just worth it because they got some of these card) please throw some thoughts out there. Trying to get my son a graduation present; we built the last one but it was pre-Covid and only 1060 super

thanks

another dumb quick question:

what search terms would you use for a Slickdeals alert to get hits like this and GPU alerts?

I built my first gaming PC pre-Covid as well and honestly, I just didn't' have it in me this time to find the best components at the best price from all the vendors.

I ended up going with a pre-built Alienware with an i9 and 4090 GPU. Gamer's Nexus had a positive review of Dell's 4090 and with closeout prices/additional coupons, it would've been impossible to build something that cheap with those components.

If you do go prebuilt, research the components and see what's upgradeable. I knew Alienwares were some of the worst in terms of upgradability which is why I got the i9 and 4090. Hopefully, knock on wood, I won't have to upgrade for many years.

I just finished my build last week. It's a 9800X3D with 32gigs RAM, 670E mobo, 2TB NVME, 360MM Lian Li water cooler, 1000W PSU, a 4TB WD HDD, and a 9070XT. It cost me a little under 2200 with no OS. I bought most of my components from Micro Center. I had to drive 4 hours each way to do so though. What I couldn't get from Micro Center I pieced together from Newegg and Amazon. I had to sign up for a Micro Center CC to get 5% off with purchases from there, and I used rewards from my Amazon Chase to get the price down some there. I lucked out and was able to get a 9070XT from Newegg for 699.99. If the market is still real wonky the next time I want to upgrade I'll likely just get a prebuilt system.

On our favorite pc building website, I just spec'd out a couple of builds, one with random cheap components, similar to this and my wish. It was $2k - $2500. That said, I generally don't advise buying parts until Thanksgiving to Christmas. Because that is when we see the best deals...Normally. I don't know where you live but, with incoming tariffs to the U.S., this holiday season may not see the same deals.

OOS now for this build. Also, spring200 is expired as a coupon for more expensive builds.

I'm in the US nowhere near a Micro Center. OOS now but I guess that's a data point for a similar build.
