I guess I'm curious how others justify these. Other than "it tilts my phone so I can see it more easily at my desk," what's the real benefit that people get out of these? It just seems like unnecessary stuff to me.

It prevents the USB/charging port from getting damaged or worn out.

An iPhone has an "alarm clock" view when docked, which is nice in your desk or nightstand. And as others have pointed out it helps prevent damage to the charging port.
I went directly to the Ottetbox site and they're selling it for $69.96, making me suspect the Amazon and Woot! ones are fake.

AI Overview
Yes, there are fake OtterBox wireless chargers, also known as counterfeit or knock-off products.
OtterBox states that it's no surprise that scammers try to pass off fake products as the real deal.
Here's how to identify a fake OtterBox wireless charger:
Price:
If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. OtterBox products are known for their high quality and durability, so a cheap price is a red flag.
Place of Purchase:
Avoid buying from unauthorized retailers, eBay, Craigslist, flea markets, or swap meets. Only purchase from reputable authorized retailers or directly from OtterBox.
Packaging:
Genuine OtterBox products have complete and high-quality packaging. If the packaging is damaged, faded, sloppy, or contains misspellings, it's likely a fake.
Product Quality:
Look for poor workmanship, low-quality materials, blemishes, or dirt on the charger. OtterBox products are known for their advanced materials, designs, and engineering.
Lack of Serial Number (In some cases):
Some OtterBox products, particularly certain case models, may have serial numbers to help with identification. If a product claims to be a genuine OtterBox but lacks a serial number when it should have one, it could be a fake.
AI Overview
While Woot is owned by Amazon and generally sells legitimate products, there have been reports of counterfeit items being sold on the platform. Woot's inventory can include surplus Amazon inventory, products from third-party vendors, and even overstock and "lost/found" items, which may increase the risk of encountering fakes.
Here's a more detailed look:
Third-Party Sellers:
Woot allows third-party sellers to sell products, and these sellers may not always be reliable.
Counterfeit Items:
There have been documented cases of counterfeit items, particularly in categories like board games and even fragrances, being sold on Woot.
Refurbished and Used Items:
Woot also sells refurbished and used items, which can sometimes raise questions about authenticity and quality.
"Imperfect" Items:
Woot sometimes sells items labeled as "imperfect," which may lead to some confusion or misrepresentation.
Overstock and Lost/Found Inventory:
Woot sources products from various avenues within Amazon, including overstock and "lost/found" items, which may not always be in pristine condition.
Recommendations:
Do Your Research:
Before purchasing, research the seller and the specific product to ensure its authenticity.
Verify Batch Codes:
If applicable, check batch codes against the manufacturer's website or resources.
Be Cautious with Third-Party Sellers:
Exercise extra caution when purchasing from third-party sellers, as they may be less reliable.
Consider the Price:
If the price seems too good to be true, it might be a sign of a potential fake or misrepresented item.
Otterbox did not design or manufacture this product. They are just rebranding it. Since they don't own the tooling it will likely show up under different names.
