Despite the coupon, you also pay tax on the original price so it's definitely not a deal so far from a deal.
Personally, this is way too expensive for a non-upgradeable pc... Plus, there isn't any Oculink.

The profit for vendors heavily depends on AMD. It's probably not very profitable for vendors but absolutely profitable for AMD. The chip itself now costs probably close to $1k, which can get down to $500 or less soon when AMD faces competitions. I'm quite optimistic on this.
Optimism is the way
This isn't a SFF tax, it's a high VRAM APU meant for machine learning / AI applications. Is it very expensive? Yes. Do most people need it? No. But, the hardware in here is undoubtedly pretty badass. That's a serious chip.
No Oculink is crazy, though.
Not just Strix Halo, but regular Strix (mainline HX 370 APU) is also marked up and it's been out over half a year. They launched at over $1000 while 2023's 7840hs (ignoring 8840hs generation which added only useless AI) were at less than $700. Even now over six months later I see lowest cost HX 370 system going for $900 while an 7840hs with slightly less CPU/GPU performance is going for close to $400, making for a much better value.
I'd love to see a MAX+ 395 with 64GB get closer to $1k though.
