I know this is going to shock you, but not every person in the world uses a laptop to play video games or graphics processing.

For basic web surfing, watching streaming movies, and word processing, 8gb works perfectly fine.

Basic web surfing with chrome on 20 tabs is 10gb of ram usage imo, suffering with it with 16gb ram sometimes when I hit 25 tabs.

Uh, no.

First of all, it's very dependent on what web sites you frequent.

Second, if you are worried about RAM use, Chrome is a bad choice. Firefox consistently benchmarks much better than Chrome for lower RAM use. Often as much as 40% lower. Unless you have specific Chrome requirements, for light duty surfing, Firefox is better.

Third, if 20 tabs on a small, light, entry level laptop is your thing, you're doing it wrong. This is not an enthusiast machine. This is not a workstation replacement machine. It's for lightweight use.

I see a lot of critiquing on slickdeals for laptops like this, but on the other end these under entry level setups are best sellers for these brands. The brick & mortar stores are always sold out of the $300 and under laptops and this specific configuration, especially with the IPS screen rather than the TN panel, for this price is better than what other places sell for.
It's obviously not a beast in the spec department, but for $280 and some manual debloating of windows, seems like one can do much worse for a new PC.

Yeah to all that, but will it run GTA VI reasonably at full settings?

It's amusing to read laptop and desktop reviews where people repeatedly post the same complaints: "Soldered RAM?!" or "The screen isn't XYZ!" If you're guys, you're whining like stereotypically dramatic women. Chill out, seriously.

Got 1 for a nephew. Repped & thank you.
And went through the "cash back site" & was 15%, $40.50. Great deal at total of $251.

I remember when I had an old computer. I would have a video game open and nearly max out cpu and ram, opening a browser spelled doom. The only browser that wouldn't slow down my computer was Brave. Something about extensions in Firefox and derivatives like chrome/edge caused it major slowdown.

8 GB is not fine unless you want to use PC for stone age needs.

Hmmm, then I guess the thousands of laptops that they are selling these days with only 8GB are being made for the stone age.

SD doesn't like to have folks say explicitly. It's the Rack, if you know how to interpret same.
