The magnetic part is only what keeps the clips closed. You have to stick these on surfaces.

I bought some of these recently. The magnets aren't quite as strong as I wish. They often pop open when I don't want them to and I have to pick up the cable off the ground again. Maybe I should just super glue them shut.

I had the same issue using them for a thicker power cord. I was able to easily solve the issue by using 2 of them right next to each other on the same line.

As an aside, they probably aren't designed for thicker (power) cords and more for USB-type cables. They work perfect for my headphone cable as well as holding my glasses on the side of the monitor.
