edit: the hue app is LOCKED to that specific tv you buy it for so it makes no sense to buy the lifetime subscription for $130 cause the $2.99/month would take 3.5 years to pay off, and who knows if you'll have that same tv for 3.5 years (doubt it as this is slickdeals).

more info on this reddit post... https://www.reddit.com/r/Hue/comm...t_but_the/
They're now offering (at least in the US) two options:

$129.99 - Single upfront payment. 14 day return policy (this is their "trial" period). Tied to one, single TV.
$2.99/mo - Subscription based payment plan, cancel at any time, good for up to 3 TVs on the same Samsung account.
Setting aside how this easily seems the best option if you just wanna "try it before you buy it", I did some quick math on the differences between the two, and here's how it works out:

$2.99/mo works out to roughly the same as 43 months, before the upfront sum is more worth it.
That number becomes 83 months (almost 7 years), when you compare it to buying the physical Play Sync box (for the original 4k model)
So, if you think you're going to own your TV for more than ~3.5 years (and you're going to want to use the Hue Sync system that entire time), then the single upfront payment is definitely more worth it.
If you think you're going to own your TV/use the Hue Sync setup for less than 3.5 years, or you just want to try it, or use it every now and again for a movie night/to impress friends when they're over, then the monthly subscription is worth it.
More importantly - if you own/plan to own more than one Samsung TV, then the best deal starts to skew more and more towards the subscription plan, as you can have up to 3 TVs on that same plan, for the same price. With 2 TVs, that break even point becomes 7.25 years (~14 years, compared with 2x Sync Boxes), and with 3 TVs, it's 10 years (20 with 3x Sync boxes).
More just "Hue" than "Philips".

The Philips WiZ line is a lot cheaper, though the app and features are less robust and the lights and such are WiFi, not Zigbee.

That said, WiZ just released an HDMI sync box that's significantly cheaper. Not as feature rich, but I have a few WiZ items and they seem to work just fine.

I have no idea why this would be so expensive.

I just bought the Philips Essentials app on my Shield. My first Google account signed into Shield was charging me $10 but when I signed my shield into my other Google account I was offered $6. So I don't know why some accounts are offered different prices. After I bought it I was able to use the light SYNC feature on all my Shields so one license will cover multiple devices. Light-syncing will also work with TV apps for free TV channels like tubi. Won't workWon't work with regular streaming apps unfortunately

That's a disaster my 4K sink box came with three-way power splitter I hope you're not saying the 8K sink box doesn't have a three-way power splitter. I just double checked to look at 4K sync box images on Amazon and it does indeed include three way power adapter I assumed 8K sink box would also
Can confirm it does not. It's just a regular power pack with a detachable plug so the main part can be used in different regions. I do see that the light bars have the three plugs, but my box definitely does not.

Can someone recommend cheaper power adapters. Or power adapters with three inputs like the one that came with my 4K sink box? I've got some of these $36 play bars on route that lack adapters

I just learned that I have significantly been overwatting my three-way plug that came with my 4K S box. 3 Plug is rated 21W. I asked Phillips about this they said it can safely be pushed to 25 watts but my gradient light strip can use as much as 20 watts, Playbar and sink box both appear to be using 8 watts Max each so I've been at a 36 watt theoretical limit. Perhaps I would be advised to discontinue this configuration and avoid a early death to my three-way plug. I found four-way plugs at Amazon for under 20 bucks that will support up to four play bars. I'm only in need of a single power adapter for single Powerbar that uses under 10 watts I was hoping to find one cheaply. No luck
