Honest question, not trying to start an argument: is there not a $650 monitor better than this? The M4 Mac Mini can be had for $450, so couldn't one just get a better monitor and pair them?

Yes. It's a waste of money buying the attached monitor. Especially since Apple's idea of recycling is shipping them back to China and washing their hands.

Additionally the Mac Mini has the 10 core CPU/GPU M4. No idea who would buy this over the mini and a separate monitor.

I think the appeal of this is that it's one unit. Portability maybe? Not that people will be ever moving it.

There's a certain luxury to your whole computer being a single lightweight thing with a single cable and excellent speakers built into it, brightness control so easy senior citizens can use it Big Grin, etc..

Apple keyboards and peripherals are also kind of pricey. I got one of these for my elderly mom who has notoriously struggled with operating her computer and it's been a game changer.

This in 27 would be great, or perfect in 29.

The Mac mini, M4 at the price of $450 and the iPad mini at 399 and 549 for the cellular version are the best deals and Apple's lineup hands-down and I will say that going from the 10 core CPUGPU to an eight core CPUGPU the benchmarks are nearly identical, especially when if anything is under sustained below the thermal throttling as the primarily limiting factor as both systems have identical cooling so after doing anything for more than a sustained five seconds they perform plus or -5% of each other one big benefit with the integrated all in one iMac to consider is it comes with about $150 worth of Apple magic mouse and keyboard as the iPad mini is bring your own not say that you can't get great deals on fantastic keyboard mouse combinations that a lot of times definitely exceed Apple's lineup, but that is the price point Apple dictates for their OEM hardware

There actually aren't many 5k monitor options out there, and definitely not under 1k new.

Realistically 90% of the people that would buy this would be just fine with a 4k monitor and M4 mini for hundreds less. But I think the real appeal to those people is the slim & simple apple aesthetic, and maybe the included Magic mouse/keyboard.

Probably not but that's because of 5k, that being said you could find something nice enough in a 4k.

However, it wouldn't be in a sleek package that has 1 cord coming off of it. Aesthetic counts for something and a lot of offices want this look at their front desk, or homeowners who want the same look for what is a web machine.

I have a mini with a generic 4K monitor - the monitor has speakers but I have decent external ones. I can control the volume and brightness from the keyboard. All up, including kb and mouse, about $800. I get the aesthetic thing with much of the Apple crowd but if I personally had to rank reasons to get a computer, aesthetics would come in pretty close to last.

It's perfect for me. I can't tolerate one single dust appears on my desk. When I used to have a desktop PC, I had to have my keyboard, mouse, and speaker removed from my desk every time I dusted off my desk, and I had to manage the cable again, it took me at least half an hour weekly. With the iMac, I could get everything done like 3 minutes, cuz it got one power cord only.

I would say for those people picking an M1 version of this refurbished from eBay for 550 is the way to go. They will never notice M1 vs M4, it also comes with apple mouse and keyboard, 1 year all state warranty and design is identical.
