I bought a brand new D-18 a few years ago. I had to send back TWO different ones because of flaws. One had a chunk of fuzzy red cloth embedded in the clear lacquer finish (below the surface between the coats of lacquer so it was there permanently) RIGHT in the middle of the TOP! (how did that get past QA!?!). The other came with cracked binding. The one I finally ended up with wasn't perfect, but I figured it was good enough. It's been a maintenance nightmare. I wrote a letter to Chris Martin and the company about all my problems and they could not be bothered to reply. For years I was a huge fan and even toured the factory twice in Nazareth, PA. There are a bunch of Martin in my family. But for me, it's been nothing but trouble and a waste of money. I would recommend you get something where they take quality more seriously and aren't resting on there laurels. I'm sure they make a fine guitar if you are a famous performing artist, but their average product (and I'm talking the ones made in PA vs the foreign-made ones) has seriously gone downhill.

The Martin D-35 is one of the legendary acoustic guitars from Martin. Along with the D-18 and D-28, the D-35 has been the choice of countless recording artists for almost 6 decades. It's a guitar that you can get as a young person and cherish your entire life. I got mine around 1981 and after 50 years it's even better and more resonant that when it was new. Simply put, this is one of the absolute finest acoustic guitars of all time. There's been great acoustics from other manufacturers, like Gibson, Taylor and smaller companies, and those are iconic in their own right. Don't miss out on this !

I'm very sorry this happened to you. We all hold C.F. Martin & Co. in such high regard .. but this is such a scary thing .. buying blind off the Internet. That's awful and I can't imagine what a major disappointment you had. A Martin D-18 ... is Legendary. There is none higher FULL STOP

I can tell you that Gibson guitars .. electric guitars at least .. went through a THIRTY-year period of idiocy. I couldn't find one I would even consider.

I ended up spending thousands upon thousands of dollars .. but .. I wouldn't touch anything Gibson unless it was 1985 or before. And it's fine. It's perfect, actually.

So for those 30 years, I kept thinking, "Who's the friggin' CEO of this company? If you have to, just make Les Pauls and shut up. It's not hard." I'm a Flying V man myself but .. if Gibson had to strip it back to barebones just to set their company right .. that's what I would do as CEO. At least for a few years until whatever was wrong stopped. It sounds like Martin needs to do that too. This is not hard. If you are the CEO of Martin ... just stop with the cutaways and electric pickups and Formica (wood dust glued together).. it's idiocy .. make Dreadnoughts and only Dreadnoughts and STRIP IT BACK to the barebones.

Make Three Guitars:

D-18

D-28

D-45

I would make no other.

For five years. Until I figured out what was wrong and put it right. Then, you could start again. This is not hard. You people are legendary. All you gotta do is make it. That's it. Strip it back until you get your quality dead straight.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

I can't imagine your dismay and disappointment.
