For the people who aren't buying this game like a stock market listing: it's a great remake of the original HL1 that started as a fan made project but got the green light from valve. It's a good replay for those who grew up playing the original as well as a great first try for those who want a classic style fps campaign from the early 2000s.

It's also a good gift for anyone who has played any valve properties but hadn't tried the original half life series
It's a great game. The level design and environmental story telling is top tier
They probably figured it was going to maintain price like Garry's Mod. Damn thing is still $10 19-years later!
Black Mesa is awesome BTW. You are somehow playing a brand new game but completely the same game as the OG at the same time. Witchcraft.

I'm confused when people say this is a HL remake.. like, it's the same game but remastered? Or it's a new game but based on the same engine, sounds, etc.?
I played the original around 1999 and it was fantastic. I bought this remake and played probably 2-3 years ago for $5. At first, I was like, this is the same game, I got scammed. After I got further, and I felt the graphics are great. In the end, I felt this remake is epic. Then I played the original gain. Oh, my, felt so outdated. My memory was just wrong.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDquIZPXxWAgood review. its been forever since i played this. dont mind paying 2 bucksapparently works horrible on steam deck tho
It RUNS great on Steam Deck, even if you're docked to play it at 1080p. But there are some weird issues that they have corrected years ago, but have not:
  1. You will frequently find yourself in situations where the flashlight only works if you have the crowbar, SMG, or Shotgun equipped.
  2. The smoke effects are more like a full screen Twin Peaks Vignette, not the source of fire or as explosion
  3. They haven't even caught up to what Valve added to the 25th Anniversary update to Half-Life in terms of menus functional logically with a d-pad and face buttons.
  4. Some parts of the environment in the outdoor area are never drawn - it's half desert, half black void
  5. Inconsistent workshop support - Green Crowbar is no problem, the green HEV suit (which just a pair of arms) does not.
That said, I would recommend anyone who can play this to absolutely buy it at that price. I bought it for $4.99 over the holiday sale, played through Half-Life and the two expansions between November and February, and I have been playing this off and of since March. "Surface Tension" is my favorite FPS level of all time, and they actually made it better (black void skyboxes notwithstanding). There is some weirdness with weapons that you can switch to on d-pad but are bypassed with the scroll wheel on a mouth (also, no real HUD element for any of it, either way), but the modern look and physics applied to an already incredible game just makes it even more fun. I haven't even made it to Xen yet, which they apparently spent a great of effort making more interesting than the original game.
I'm not gonna anticipate OpFor or Blue Shift working since those seen to workshop mods rather than discrete releases, but I don't think I'd replay those anyway. Some quirks aside, this is one my favorite "remakes" of all time (and no, I haven't played RE4 Remake yet).

At $2, I figured I would just buy an extra copy for one of my backup Steam accounts.
