It's also a good gift for anyone who has played any valve properties but hadn't tried the original half life series
Black Mesa is awesome BTW. You are somehow playing a brand new game but completely the same game as the OG at the same time. Witchcraft.

An overwhelmingly positive game and for $2? Why not!
looking forward to the opposing force version of this coming out...
- You will frequently find yourself in situations where the flashlight only works if you have the crowbar, SMG, or Shotgun equipped.
- The smoke effects are more like a full screen Twin Peaks Vignette, not the source of fire or as explosion
- They haven't even caught up to what Valve added to the 25th Anniversary update to Half-Life in terms of menus functional logically with a d-pad and face buttons.
- Some parts of the environment in the outdoor area are never drawn - it's half desert, half black void
- Inconsistent workshop support - Green Crowbar is no problem, the green HEV suit (which just a pair of arms) does not.
That said, I would recommend anyone who can play this to absolutely buy it at that price. I bought it for $4.99 over the holiday sale, played through Half-Life and the two expansions between November and February, and I have been playing this off and of since March. "Surface Tension" is my favorite FPS level of all time, and they actually made it better (black void skyboxes notwithstanding). There is some weirdness with weapons that you can switch to on d-pad but are bypassed with the scroll wheel on a mouth (also, no real HUD element for any of it, either way), but the modern look and physics applied to an already incredible game just makes it even more fun. I haven't even made it to Xen yet, which they apparently spent a great of effort making more interesting than the original game.I'm not gonna anticipate OpFor or Blue Shift working since those seen to workshop mods rather than discrete releases, but I don't think I'd replay those anyway. Some quirks aside, this is one my favorite "remakes" of all time (and no, I haven't played RE4 Remake yet).
