This Lodge piece is manufactured in the USA.

This has been had for cheaper on past deals, and personally its not a good pan....unless you like cleaning groves, or are going to hang it on the wall like mine, as a decorative piece. You would be better off cooking in a flat pan, or on a grill......IMO
Grill pans are for people who don't understand: the more contact with your meat the better. Actual grills have grates to let the heat from the flame through...pans don't need this. Unless you just have to have lines on your steak and prioritize that over flavor, sear your meat on a regular cast iron.
This.

I bought the square version of this pan about 12 years ago. I've used it....maybe 20 times since then. The grooves are a pain to clean properly, and I didn't want to invest in a plastic groove tool like a George Foreman Grill had. While I liked the charred lines it made (with the help of a press), I still reach for my 10" flat skillet when I want to cook a steak.

At this price, you're not going to hurt buying it to try it out. It'll give you the grill-line marks, but it won't have the same smoke/flavoring you get with grillin'.

Agree. Cleaning isn't so ba with kosher salt and just kinda going with the grooves but I have had a square and a round and the problem I had was with spalling where some of the groove peaks kinda exploded when meat was placed upon a rippin' hot pan.

Yea, it's a pain to clean but made the best grilled chicken for me. It needs to be thin, but I think because the entire chicken meat isn't touching the face of the cast iron, it doesn't get as dry and cooks perfectly. I typically marinade it so that may have helped as well, but on a regular cast iron, I didn't get the same type of cook I like/wanted.

To clean I'd recommend a stiff bamboo brush.

Exactly! This style of pan is terrible. In my camping cookware box now. If you are strong enough just get the 12" and never look back.

I may be in the minority here, but I use my grill pan to cook ground beef to get it broken up into tiny little bits by grinding it along the bottom with a strong slotted spatula. This also makes cleaning a pan like this much easier since I'm not searing anything into the little grooves. Can still be a bit of a pain to clean sometimes, but it beats using my food processor to get it into fine bits and then cleaning all of that.
Thanks OP, my current one is a bit worn and not cast iron, I may have to get this.

I agree that the pan is pretty useless, but idk if it's "invest" if the plastic thing is less than $5... or at least it was when I bought it.. Same deal - bought the more square version over 10 years ago and don't use it much... I like it for particularly fatty meat like lamb, especially on the grill... I've seen people do weird stripey waffles too, but at the end of the day I also wouldn't recommend it.

I have both this and the flat pan. Both from lodge.

In general, you need a heat protector that goes over the handle, so you don't burn yourself when cooking.

Otherewise, I do dig the grill bottom, more so than the flat plan. I've made a good number of steaks using this. All turned out looking nice. Yeah, there's more contact with the flat pan, but this seem to do just fine.

As for cleaning, I just let the oil cook in and then do a quick scrub with the rough side of sponge. Then I heat off the moisture. No issues.

What a bunch of snowflakes. Yes, they're harder to clean than flat cast iron. And, if you wait a year or two, you might save $3. But, if you like steaks, burgers, and chicken with grill marks, this will work well. I've used cast iron grill pans for decades. I have flat ones I pull out when I want full sear. But, you really have to be the princess with the pea to notice a difference in the final tasting experience between flat & groved. And, BTW, dropping fat hitting between the groves, smokes and adds flavor. I like the square variety.
