I was ready to buy until I read the Q&A's. Ryobi rep. says this can only be used with the 3" x 12" depth auger bit included. Ad is misleading because they even show among the "frequently bought together" items a 4" bit and even a 6" auger bit. Pretty much useless for anything other than a metal fence post in soft ground. That's just my opinion. Read the specs. and Q&A's yourself to make an informed decision.
I helped a neighbor dig small holes in clay soil for his aluminum fence. He started by using a battery-powered auger like this one. It lasted a couple of holes before the battery died; but it was slow and tedious for those two holes.

I brought my gas-powered auger and we did 55 holes in a couple hours. I couldn't imagine using a battery auger for anything other than small holes for plants, and even then there are much cheaper ways to do that.
My 15 year old blue Ryobi drill is my auger. You can but the auger drill bits on Amazon

If my experience if the dirt is soft enough to use one of these you can use a shovel for a faster result. They are only kind of useful when planting multiple small plants

No. Any item where all the pieces are sold under a single SKU are never eligible for the "hack".

Why not get an auger drill bit like https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-E...B095C2PLQP and use it with a high torque drill? I had ok results with this kind of bits in a hammer drill with auxiliary (side) handle.

Ryobi makes a 40v Auger that I got on sale at Direct Tools for about $200, little more than this dinky one.

Ryobi makes a 40v auger that gets great reviews. Picked one up last fall from Direct Tools for $240 with battery.

I use the 40v one and it's much closer to gas than these 18v ones. The anti-kickback is also super nice if you're unable to secure a buddy to help out.

Very obvious that you've never dug a hole in your life. Aside from recommending the wrong tool, you'd also know why people would be tempted to get an Auger. The actual manual alternative is a Post Hole Digger, a garden trowel will result in sloped edges instead of straight (which makes the hole structurally weaker, since you're disturbing surrounding soil).

I agree with others though: This battery powered Auger doesn't make sense. For $70 more you can get the Harbor Freight PREDATOR Gas-Powered Earth Auger. For about $100 per day you can rent one from Home Depot. Both will work better, faster, and easier. I actually really like electric tools, but our battery tech just isn't there yet for certain jobs which this is one.

This is correct. If you have rocky soil this won't work, and if you have soft rock free soil you can just dig quickly with a post hole digger.

Contra to the opinions here, I bought this to plant tulip bulbs last year and found it to be very helpful.

A drill can do the job, but puts strain on your wrist, and if you hit a snag you could injure yourself. The handles on this auger allow you to use both hands with more leverage, providing better torque and decreasing the chances of injury.

I have yet to see a battery powered auger than can handle Missouri clay. So far I've seen Greenworks and Rigid. I havent seen a Ryobi one yet, but I doubt it's going to do any better.

For a little more, I prefer to get something that does it for real and not fail on me, when I'm in the middle of a project:

1500-Watt-1.6-HP-Electric-6-in-Digging-Auger-Drill-Home Depot [homedepot.com]

Unfortunately, and not sure if it looks like AR15 - M16 or any other assault rifle, this is not available for purchase in CA! And seriously, what is wrong here?
