Why even floss? I heard it makes gaps in your teeth so you need braces.

How many people in the early 19th century had braces? Compare to today where almost all kids get braces.

Pacifiers are prolific. I didn't floss as a kid and still needed braces. But I did suck my thumb.

It doesn't. Flossing cleans between your teeth and along the gumline without altering the shape, size, or spacing of your teeth. If you're noticing gaps, that's because of gum disease.

If there's too much of it, sure, but too much of anything can kill you. Ingesting too much oxygen will poison you. Ingest too much water and you'll drown. But that doesn't mean that oxygen and water aren't beneficial overall - you can't live without them.

Similarly too much fluoride is dangerous, but that's why it's used in minute amounts - which have been shown to help keep teeth healthy with no negative consequences. Towns that previously removed fluoride from their water supply found their cases of tooth decay and tooth disease greatly increased such that people demanded that the fluoride be added back in.
