I'm guessing that at the present date Seagate is making such large drives using SMR instead of CMR so they aren't worth shucking? Can anyone confirm if these are SMR or CMR?

Everything I've seen indicates the 20,24,28 tb are CMR drives. Seagate doesn't offer the 28tb outside this enclosure as far as I'm aware. Its speculated that these are binned Exos drives, so they follow the same specs (7200rpm, HAMR CMR) but different firmware and less cache. They have the class 1 laser warning on the label which should confirm HAMR. The only high capacity drives that use SMR are the Exos 32tb and 36tb as of right now.

I have a Barracuda 24tb shucked from one of these in a NAS since February, no issues. It's in a storage pool with 2 other Exos 24tb and didn't degrade the performance/is operating at the same temp. I also have this 28tb still in its enclosure that I'm using to backup the NAS biweekly. It works fine but does run hot in that enclosure. Averages 53c vs the 24tb in the NAS running at 32c.. I'm using it as cold storage so I'm not too concerned, but if it were on all the time I'd probably put a fan on it.

can you check the diskinfo (CrystalDiskInfo or HD Sentinel) of the 24TB? It should identify the exact model / make of the drive even though it's in the enclosure.

They should be HAMR CMR drives. I'm not aware of any DM-SMR drives anywhere near this capacity. There are HM-SMR drives but those aren't going to consumers. It's definitely going to be HAMR. Seagate's largest non-HAMR CMR drive is 24TB (I think 26TB for SMR).

My theory is that Seagate repurposed the production line that made the prior generation HAMR Exos to make the new Barracudas. Many of the specs are identical. That generation of Exos never had a retail release. They only made it into the hands of consumers through resellers of recertified drives. I think it's less likely that the Barracudas are binned versions of the new Exos, as the specs are different.

A few months back I read an article about new drives from Seagate hitting 32TB but the issue was that they were SMR drives. The CMRs I think were some of the 24 and 28TB that have been mentioned here but I didn't realize they already had theses in mass production. I can't find the article but it read as if these drives wouldn't come to market until Q4 of 2025 so I'm a bit surprised to see these 28TB's selling as refurbs with some of the other deals posted lately.

These are Barracudas.

I'm not sure about the latest generation but the previous generation HAMR CMR drives have been available up to 28TB for awhile. It's only recently that they've become available new to consumers, under the Barracuda name. The Exos branded version had only been available new to some enterprise customers (and eventually recertified for us peasants). I'm guessing the 32TB SMR drive you read about is a newer generation, likely 30TB in CMR mode.

I wonder why Seagate & WD want to equaily overcharged HDD to consumers despite they are completely different company? And how they can be able to getaway with it?
