I'm just trying to understand why this is even an Okay deal. Many places sell 16Ga long cords for cheap here a link for the same spec with light for $15 dollars

If you're powering string/patio lights, or trickle charging a battery this is probably good enough.
Be sure to check the amps on what you're using before trusting this cord.
Since it looks so heavy duty, I'd put some electrical tape around the wire just before each end as a reminder this isn't a "heavy duty" cable.
Think of the 10amps rating as a peak rating like a generator. It probably isn't meant to sustain that amperage forever.
