I have compiled a sortable Google Sheet. It lists if the film is available in UHD outside of this deal, and if so, if it has historically been upgraded (30 of 50 are available in UHD. At least 8 have historically received upgrades in the past). https://docs.google.com/spreadshe...sp=sharing
Believe Apple auto upgrades only if you bought it from them. My MA titles that I bought from elsewhere as HD remained as HD even after a 4K version became available on itunes afaik

I mainly purchased the older movies, but the ones available in 4k show as 4k in my apple tv list due to being movies anywhere compatible.
That is an unfortunate byproduct of how AppleTV shows titles. They show the highest available via their platform—depending which device you're viewing on. On iOS, it shows the highest available. If you have the (Mac) desktop app, it shows you what you actually have. I'm not sure about their TV apps.
A good way to check as well is in Movies Anywhere. If FAH upgrades you, it historically has not ported the upgrades to MA (same goes for when Apple upgrades an Apple-purchased title).

Can you elaborate a bit on this statement? I have purchased MA-compatible titles from a variety of sources, and they have auto-upgraded to 4K with Apple, as far as I can tell. For example, I purchased The Departed as part of an MA bundle, it was only available in HD at the time of purchase, but I now have the Dolby Vision copy in my Apple library, and have watched that copy and it did show DV.
I don't know of any 1080p DV movies; does your statement imply that my copy is not 4K? (Genuinely asking; I always assumed Apple gave you the 4K copy if you had any copy of it through MA, but I could be wrong!)

I see Fandango with there upgrade same as new purchase price and it ticks me off. As long as they are Movies Anwhere you can watch them at apple or Amazon in full 4k UHD.

One of the standard categories on the Apple TV (streaming device, not the service) for movies in your library is "4K HDR".
I can confirm that I have The Departed via Movies Anywhere, in HD, but on my Apple TV, it shows The Departed in the 4K HDR category (with DV) and when I play it, it plays in Dolby Vision.
It is *possible* that it plays in 1080pDV (I've never seen this happen before, but it is strictly possible) but I don't think that's the case. I think it's playing the 4KDV version of the movie, because I've never seen a retail HD movie with DV.

Apple only upgrades the titles you purchased directly through them, and certain code redemptions when you redeem through Apple (not sure if that is still the case, but it was for a time).
I purchased SEVEN through one of the Mix & Match deals on FAH and got the HDX version. FAH later upgraded it to 4K UHD. Movies Anywhere shows I have HD. The AppleTV app on iOS shows "4K, Dolby Vision," while the Mac OS AppleTV app and Roku app shows "HD," which it plays at as well.
I also purchased The Departed via a bundle on iTunes/Apple, and it still shows I have The Departed in HD. But it says "HDR, HD, Dolby Vision" but no 4K. I haven't done as much research into that title specifically—maybe WB re-listed a new 4K version that doesn't upgrade automatically? It's allowing me to "buy" the 4K for $14.99 via Apple.

My experience is same as what dynamiceyebrow said...i bought LOTR outside of itunes in HD and it plays as HD on both my ipad and apple tv (even though it shows as 4K with DV in my ipad but playback is only HD)

ITunes only upgrades HD movies purchased or redeemed directly on iTunes to 4K for free automatically. It does NOT upgrade movies ported into iTunes via MA linkage. If the iTunes redemption/purchase was initially HD and then 4K is released, it's upgraded on iTunes ONLY for free. All other services will make you purchase the 4K upgrade if you wanted 4K elsewhere.
Dummy question: how do you physically "add 5 titles from the promotion page"? If I click on a title, next page shows "Rent" and "Buy", and if I click on Buy, next page is simply checkout... I can't seem to add them one by one to a cart... Thanks in advance!

So, is the consensus here that we're somehow getting a 1080p DV version of The Departed? I'm willing to believe that, it would just really surprise me. Picture attached for reference.
