Anyone can comment if this is a good fit for a total guitar-ignorant who has recently been hit by the sudden urge to pick up guitar?

I believe Les Paul is a renowned brand so it's probably more than enough for me.

I learned electric on an Epiphone LP and it worked well. This one doesn't have some features that mine had (adjustable intonation, separate volume and tone), but it's a solid guitar to learn on.

The tuners and bridge may be a bit finicky, but I'd say it's a solid guitar for a beginner. It'll help you get an idea for what you like, want, and would not want in a future guitar

LP's are usually really heavy. I can't comment on this one, but it may be worthwhile to pick it up and just strum it. Trust me, for a novice, a heavy guitar can be a burden and introduce shoulder/neck pain (on top of finger pain..ha) that'll discourage you from practicing. I started with an Epi Casino because I liked the way it looked, but it was super-uncomfortable and sold it.
If I had to do it again, I'd probably pickup a nice Squier Strat or Jazzmaster (frequently on sale and really nice guitars for beginners). They have a nice scallop to contour to your gut/side and just an all-around comfy guitar. The LPs are NOT comfy....
Check out the "Squier Sonic Stratocaster Limited-Edition Electric Guitar (Surf Green)" that posted here a couple days ago for ~ $160. That's a nice starter.

I've been playing guitar (badly) for 15+ years, have a Gibson Les Paul, a MIM fender Tele and Strat, but picked one of these up a couple months ago on a whim and was surprised by how good it is. Stays in tune, sounds good, neck is nice, no fret issues that I can see/feel. Definitely worth picking up(Plus, GC has a decent return policy if you decide you don't want it, or get one that's bad quality or whatever). I find myself bringing this to practice more often than my other ones
Also definitely lighter than a regular Les Paul.

I have a LP knockoff from Monoprice and it has a great feel to it so I assume this will be the same. I also have a Fender Squire and the LP knockoff feels better for whatever that's worth.

Another alternative is to look for used guitars on FB market place - usually tons to be found there. Could maybe score a good quality one at lower price and then get a sense if you want to stick with guitar without huge commitment!

Epiphone Specials are very light, a few ounces heavier than a Squier Sonic, which is a skinny body strat style and a bit light to the point of neck dive. 7.2lbs vs 6.8lbs in Freedom units.

Overall if the Sonic speaks to you get one, I think the bridge is better, tuners a LOT better and it's critical to play in tune when learning but my Special intonated very well with 9's.

If someone was agnostic about Strat v. LP I would recommend the Sonic at $160, And used, never played for closer to $100 is even better for either. Maybe look for an old Squier SE or Standard for better quality if not too shagged. The stuff made by Cort in Indonesia is really good.

Thanks for this comment! I am looking to getting my first guitar and saw the $160 Sonic yesterday, and was about to ask what opinions were on this vs that. Was leaning the Sonic so will go that. Thank you!
