See the steps below from https://slickdeals.net/f/17077762-at-t-128gb-samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-5g-w-added-line-or-new-customer-activation-350-35-activation-free-w-free-s-h?p=167181442#post167181442 (you will have to change to s24 from s22 if you want to flash unlocked firmware) but rest is same.

ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.

0. Do the following steps after paying off the phone fully and then waiting for a day or so for the unlock portal to get the paid off status.

1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.

Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.

1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.
FYI for those ordering with ATT, activation fee on the bill can be waived automatically by clicking on "don't recognize this fee" on the bill on web/app even if it's more than 3 days. It's one time (every 12 months or so) favor from ATT. See wiki of this thread https://slickdeals.net/f/17327499-oneplus-nord-n30-5g-128gb-unlocked-chromatic-gray-cph2513-best-buy-0 for more details on bills afterwards.
I ordered online yesterday the ATT one to expect receiving it today. Called both the Ontrac and Walmart since there is no update on tracking. Walmart said it's not in stock so they will send once it is back in stock. Online already showed and still showing it's in stock. Now I will not be able to receive it any time soon and will miss the 1-3 days window to playoff and cancel etc. Too much hassle imo. now I am preparing to cancel the order if no update later today 😞. Credit pull loss

Finally i received end of 3rd day. it was memorial day holiday when i ordered hence the delay. Was able to cancel it 4th day. Will likely get bill including the activation fee which will see if can get waived . Thanks OP

Success on S24 Ultra ATT:
  1. Paid off phone yesterday afternoon
  2. SIM swapped today (not quite 24 hours later)
  3. Did unlock with IEMI and separate email (not sure if separate email matters?)
  4. Note that you need to insert the non-ATT SIM to get prompted to enter the unlock code
  5. Phone unlocked
After that, I downloaded latest U1/XAA firmware from samfw and used SamFw tool to Odin flash (since I already had it setup from my S21). Took a bit over 7 minutes to flash, then on first boot before I could get anywhere with new device setup it wanted to restart for carrier firmware (total wireless/TFN in my case). After that went through normal setup and smart switch. Signed into samsung via my S21 QR code.
The only other things I did were to apply updates from ATT before getting to the Android 15/UI 7 update just in case that update would make flashing harder.
Next step is to cancel!

i just relogged in after an hour and now i can see my other unlocked device in att account. But now i tried to do unlock using "not an att customer" and got below message Frown .. I already paid off last night and it did show "fullfilled". But looks like ATT has updated the policy for unlock .. Anyone else able to do swim swap on att line ? You can't unlock your device until your installment plan is paid off. If you pay off your device as part of your monthly bill, wait until the start of your next bill period to unlock it. Want to pay off your device early? Make sure your number has been active on the device for at least 60 days. Then, sign into your account to review and pay off your installment plan. Wait 48 hours after you make your final payment to submit a new unlock request.
Been a few days - any luck?

What about the cases when people (who are not existing Verizon customer) didn't get any email from verizon or Walmart didn't ask about verizon info during order? If we are able to get it on a new Verizon and it says nothing owed we should be in the clear, right?

Yeah, wait a day or so before doing the SIM swap
So I followed everything you did and it worked perfectly.
I waited til it got here (ATT version), made a new user and registered with them, got the phone working with the new number I had elected for on walmart and then paid it off using the mobile app because it wasn't showing up on the website online. It stated that it was "fulfilled" after about 20 minutes and then I swapped the sim into my s21 ultra that I'm upgrading from.
I turned off the verizon esim in my s21 ultra and downloaded the app and made sure it was registered with the new number on ATT. My s24U I left connected to wifi, but no sim in it. Then I checked that my s21 ultra is what was showing on myATT and the website, and it was, so I tried to unlock the s24 ultra, but it said I hadn't met the conditions yet. So, I waited until this morning and tried again, and this time it went through and I unlocked it by putting an old unused sim card from a verizon mvno into it and entering the code ATT gave me.
Then I cancelled my service with ATT while it still showed my S21 ultra as the phone registered with it.
That was the only ridiculous part. I had to sit on chat for 30 minutes while the rep tried everything to keep me on ATT. But he confirmed that it's closed and now I just have to wait and see how much I'm paying...
I did ask for the activation fee to be waived but he didn't seem to understand very well, or was playing dumb, so I have no idea. He simply said that it would be "prorated", but I assume that will just be the monthly portion, not any fees.
Anyways, super glad to not have to wait two months to start using the phone!

Make sure the line is disconnected for good, i.e the line is not shown in the app,.you can't make calls etc. CS reps are trained to disconnect at the end of the month, that's not something you want.

Tried porting out Verizon number on day 3 after activating the device with eSIM - other carrier got an error saying number not active. My Verizon line was added to an existing account. Decided to cancel the line through chat. Remaining device payment will be added to my next bill.

Do I have the AT&T steps right?

0.) UnFreeze Credit
1.) Order
2.) Pay off in full via website
3.) Activate it on ATT with provided SIM. Make sure shows up onMyatt app/web.
4.) Put that ATT SIM in another phone. Reboot. Make some calls. Make sure this phone is showing up in myatt app/web. May have to use incognito (cache!)
5.) Go to Unlock portal, choose not an ATT customer, use IMEI of new phone and submit unlock request. Only do once.
6.) Once unlocked. Cancel the line. Probably have to call in
7.) Make sure is cancelled now - i.e. line not shown in app / can't make calls. CS reps trained to disconnect at end of month, which is less good
8.) If cancelled it within 3 days of order, no activation fee.
i. Otherwise myatt app/website, "don't recognize this fee" under activation. Can get rid of. Instant/Automatic
