I have Verizon home internet and looked into this for traveling awhile back, and most people that tried it reported that their hardware was geofenced to their home address and it wouldn't work; on the other hand, most people that tried the same thing with T-Mobile home internet were able to use theirs while traveling. Though I believe your contract in any case requires it only be used at the home address or your service can be terminated. I was going to try it out on my last road trip, but I ultimately didn't because I could add using my phone as a mobile hotspot to my plan for $10 and that was more than adequate and didn't risk getting my best option for home internet locally terminated.
Unless you really want a Switch, this seems pretty meh. I'm paying $35/month for FIOS 300/300 and not chained to Verizon wireless.
Reading is fundamental but it's a 3 year price lock not 3 year contract. Meaning they won't raise the price for 3 years. You only have to keep service for 180 days.

Did a technician come or everything DIY? Did they swap the equipment or use the same existing equipment? Thanks.
You have like 30 days after you actually turn off the service to return equipment. If you use the VZ router, the switching out of equipment might lead to a phone call to get it activated, but in theory, you shouldnt need to do that.

This is what I have done over the past two promotions: Assume that the account is under "User A"

- Call VZ as User A, set up disconnect date (make sure you are not invalidating any prior promos). Lets call this date January 2nd
- Go to VZ website (Use a CB site, youll usually get a few bucks), sign up for promo as User B. Wait around on the site, maybe reload the page...they will usually toss some additional random giftcard to you in the chat box as a way to get you to actually finish the deal. Sign up for the deal. Set up install date of January 3rd. (any date on or after the disconnect of the other service.
- Create an online profile for your new account as User B. Youll need this profile to get your free swag later.
- You will likely get the equipment mailed to you a few weeks before January 3rd. You can choose to use this equipment or not.
- On January 2nd, probably soon after midnight, your service will turn off as User A. If you are up, NOW you can activate service as User B. Call tech support, tell them you want to turn on service as a new user, and they will check your ONT is good, and youre golden.
- If you can wait until January 3rd, it is likely that the service will re-activate on its own.
- Return equipment that you have as "User A" to a local Fios store.
- The free swag that youre entitled to will be available pretty soon after activation. Consoles are usually a month, and giftcards usually three months.

Other stuff that you can do:
- You can get an extra repeater by calling them later and complaining that the reception sucks. It only works with their router, but its quite strong. This is free.
- See if you can get VZ work rewards to save $10 a month.

BIG YMMV...since it requires 180 days of active service to avoid claw back...if you dont get this activated ASAP, you wont be able to cancel and get any potential BF deals. You can in theory set a install date thats really far out (I set mine for the day after Christmas), but keep this in mind. I wont take the risk, since the holiday deals have yet to let me down.

General question, but if I get this, can I take the Verizon modem when I go on vacation or something and use the 5G internet somewhere else?
I did have the same question and asked Verizon support. They said I couldn't do it because the Modem was registered at the address where I registered my home internet. It might work for the first couple days but it will soon be terminated due to using the modem in different location.

I live in a small town. Why is this available in one part of town, but not another? Is it because that area is the wealthier part of town?

The original Switch. You can search it on their website.

It depends on how many cell tower they have in the location. Wealthy can be a factor.

I'm paying $80/month for AT&T 500/500 so this seems like a deal, except I don't want Verizon post paid. 🤷 ♂️

The wealthier an area, the worse the cell phone reception.

Just a note: the router is technically not free, Verizon just don't charge you monthly for it. You will need to return their equipment when you close the account. If you already using your own router, don't get it. It's meant for Verizon to easily troubleshoot your outage.
