You're correct regarding the way honey is basically "laundered". For example, the US might not import Chinese honey, but it just imports Chinese honey that passes through Brazil, for instance. And instead they can call that Brazilian honey "organic". While no honey produced in the US can actually carry the organic label without some very fast/loose application of the requirements. So, you go to the store and thinking you're buying a premium "organic" product when you're actually buying who-knows-what that just happened to go through a pass-through company. Another little trick they like to do is call it "USDA Grade A", a not-so-subtle implication that it might be of domestic origin. Nature Nate's (a frequent flyer on Slickdeals) is a prime example of this. Read the front and back of the label and spiral further down the vortex of where the honey actually comes from...
In truth, I really don't care where people get their honey and I do not look down on anyone for buying what they can. If all you're using it for is dumping it into your coffee in place of sugar, you're probably not going to notice a huge difference between Great Value honey and the good stuff. Best case is obviously that you find a neighbor who is selling it and buy it from them. But that's the same with eggs, beef, veggies, etc. It isn't always practical or financially viable to do such. I price my honey fairly inexpensively at $20 for 3 pounds. It's higher than Walmart honey, but cheaper (and better) than premium brands like Nate's. And, hell... if you ask nice I'd walk you right to the beehives and show you where it came from. No label word salad games...
