Cobalt bits are very brittle and will break easily if you're not drilling straight or get it jammed. On the other hand, they are very hard and will hold a sharp edge much better than regular high speed steel bits. I get the cobalts out only when I need to, for drilling into harder steels that cheaper bits won't get very far into.
