Be forewarned, I thought the same. Bought the 256GB version of this before when they were listed for about $15.

Failed after 1 month of occasional use. While Amazon refunded the value of the drive. Lost the data on the drive which has far more value

I can basically recreate something similar with an external nvme ssd drive with a cheap throw away ssd laying around

That's a good point. I've got a spare M.2 enclosure AND two 128GB or larger M.2 drives in a box on my shelf.

False advertising. You will see 30MB/s maybe for a few seconds and then it will drop to 5-10MB/s on average. Look at the reviews, specifically the ones showing large file transfers to the drive. If your use case involves filling it up with data once and then reading that data many times then this drive will be fine, as long as you're OK with waiting an hour just to fill it up. But for anything that requires repeated writing it is essentially junk.

Thanks for sharing. Ten years ago, good USB 3.0 drives could maintain 50MB/s for entire large video transfers.

Yes, lots of flash memory products have gone to shit, probably due to companies switching to using TLC and even QLC NAND. Even the big brands are not immune. My old Samsung Pro SD cards can easily write data at 60-80MB/s non stop. The newer Samsung Pro Plus SD cards I bought in the last couple of years can't match that.

Step 1) buy 128gb 2230 nvme drives on ebay for $6 (yes seriously)
Step 2) buy $12 orico 2230 enclosure
Step 3) donate all thumb drives to starving children in Africa
Step 4) profit

Perhaps, but it won't be the size of a normal USB flash drive. Plus that drive has both USB C and USB A connectors on it.
You're absolutely right. The thumb drives are way larger and less portable. See the 2230 size m.2 enclosures.

I looked hard at the 256GB model a few weeks ago, and instead went with a Samsung Bar Plus that has better reviews in general. It was worth the extra $5.
The Samsung FIT/BAR Plus are greatat first. Unfortunately, all the ones I've used in the last few years suffer from rapid degradation. I've seen those 400MB/s sequential read speeds drop into the single digits, after several months. It's a shame because those are the only modern USB flash drives I've found with decent (actually pretty spectacular) 4K random writes.

Quote from burticus :
Sure why not, in for 2. I have to upgrade 2 parental PCs in the near future (thanks M$) and this is a pretty cheap backup solution. I just hope the write speeds are better than the bargain bin Microcenter USB's I bought in the past.... those things work but they are SO FREAKING SLOW. I've been giving those away or using them for much smaller ISO images which is a waste of space, but those things SUCK to use on a regular basis
I wouldn't count on it. Most modern USB flash drives have dreadful performance, particularly when it comes to 4K random writes (often <10KB/s). I've basically switched to using MicroSD cards in a slim USB reader.

That's odd. All the Samsung MicroSD cards I've tested have been able to maintain almost exactly what they advertise on the package. The Pro Plus cards had no issue maintaining 100MB/s+ from beginning to end (in the Samsung reader).

Once you do the research and realize that a drive like this exists..... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3B18PKTThen there is no worrying about speeds. The thing is superhuman. The fact that people don't know it exists is mind numbing.
The only drawback is they use constant power so if your using in on a laptop or something on battery

Cheaper per unit & USB 3.2

PNY 128GB Attaché X USB 3.2 Gen 1 Flash Drive, 3 pack for $23

Cheaper per GB

PNY 256GB Attaché X USB 3.2 Gen 1 Flash Drive - $15
https://a.co/d/2wPjbRE

PNY has the advantage over Amazon Basics for reliability as well; a step above the budget thumb drives. Not Samsung or SanDisk, but probably among the best quality/price ratio.

"mind numbing" that people don't know it exists?

Aside from the absurd phrasing, how hyperbolic can you possibly get? Yikes shake head
