Of course these are just for supplemental heat - no one should expect it to replace all necessary heating conditions, compared to heat pumps that continue to provide heat quite a bit lower.
That said, because our current house only has an electric furnace that can hit $400/month in the winter with the tstat set to 68F, three of these units with heat have saved us quite a bit of money last winter. Heat pump installs to get our service's electric load calcs under control (no resistive electric backup) would cost us more than it's worth, so we're trying to limp along with window units until we move again in some more years. Some stupid decisions were made by previous homeowners (wiring in electric appliances in place of propane, jacking up the load calcs, without service/cabling updates).
We purchased these used for about $100 each, but each one is able to save that much money in our situation in about 6-winter-weeks. They do indeed stop providing heat in the 40-ish Fahrenheit range, with some variability depending on how charged the system is, although if they aren't powered off (to immediately go into the LO state on power on), they can still heat a single room slightly, down to near freezing. Central HVAC fan on to recirculate the air around helps even out the room-to-room variation.
If the night lows are in the 40-45F range, then two of these units can keep our 2-story house heated - we see about 65F indoor temperature in the morning if they are allowed to hit 76-78F by the time it's 40F outside at night. The heat output decreases at lower temperatures, and they are more likely to cycle.
Good units, but IME this is the normal price for these things. It's about what Costco sold them for years ago.

Central heat pump to replace the furnace is the proper solution for this floor plan and electrical loads, but for the permitting and inspections to pass, other changes have to be made, unless I spend $25k (as the cheapest quote) installed for a non-resistive-backup HP. Or switch appliances back to propane like the house originally had way back when, or I guess use the wood fireplaces as an annoying, expensive heat source. I've already had these discussions with the county regarding permitting.
I won't be here long enough for any of this to make sense, even for any value gained when we sell. The noise of window units is my only gripe. My three inverter window units combined take about 3kW to effectively cool the house in the summer, and 2.5kW to heat it in the winter, with exception of cold nights where the furnace kicks in to maintain 66F. Our furnace is breakered for a ridiculous 28kW, and rated at 20kW.
