This appears to be the first deal on Kobo gift cards ever, and a 20% discount is pretty good for saving a bit of money on purchases you were going to make anyway.
Based on the gift card description on Kroger (and on a visit to the Kobo website), these are only applicable towards the purchase of eBooks and audiobooks; there's no option on the Kobo website to apply them towards the purchase of a device.

Good deal if you want to load up a balance onto your Kobo account so that you can change your location and purchase books from overseas (like Kobo's UK store). I haven't had to do that in awhile, but it's a real pain otherwise.
