This is nowhere near as fast or premium (no DRAM) as the name would have you believe, it's a 5/4.2 GB/s r/w drive that only has a x2 PCIe connection (edit: I forgot this has a 4.0 x4 fallback mode, making it acceptable for PCIe 3.0-4.0 systems). I'd probably prefer it over similar drives at this price point, but only because Samsung doesn't change hardware on you.

PS, here's a nifty spreadsheet curated by https://borecraft.com/

Seems like a good deal, this has no DRAM?

PCIe 5.0 x2 = 4.0 x4.
Nothing good in this SSD, except the current price... The real write speed is around 3.4 GB/s and after 100 GB the speed drops to 550 MB/s, so if you plan to work with big files (>100gb) it's not a good ssd for you.

Can anyone recommend this for PS5 if I add a heatsink (aftermarket) to it?

Thanks. Is the 990 Evo Plus better? Samsung or Western Digital is more reliable? Thanks.

It's under the recommended R/W speed for the PS5, so it may or may not work. I've seen drives that were under the recommended speeds work, but I've also seen them not able to be read by a PS5. Personally, I wouldn't take the chance.

Where do those numbers come from? This [tomshardware.com] review reports quite different results:

Quote :
The 2TB 990 EVO, in PCIe 4.0 x4 mode, writes at 3.94 GB/s in pSLC mode for just over 29 seconds. This suggests a cache of 114GB, which is typically the size for an Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0 drive at 1TB. TurboWrite is a hybrid cache — part static, part dynamic — that results in generally consistent post-cache performance. At this size it's usually 6GB of static with 108GB of dynamic, and having a balanced cache — albeit smaller than expected — makes sense for this drive.

After the pSLC is exhausted, the drive hits a TLC mode at around 1.2 GB/s with steady state performance around 1.7 GB/s. This is a pretty good result, matching the 970 EVO Plus with half the channels. The drive performs slightly worse in PCIe 5.0 x2 mode with a weaker peak, but it's not enough to make a big difference.

tomshardware uses IOmeter program to measure speed. I wrote the real write speed, showed by windows explorer. When you copy big file, speed is 3.4-3.5 GB/s and after SLC cache is full (100-110 GB) speed drops to 550-600 MB/s

Buy the 990 pro with heatsink. Never had issues.
