I mean mine are 5+ years old so not necessarily. Wouldn't hurt to look up reviews and settings for it though.

Thoughts on the "Intel Core 5 120U?" I've been out of the CPU world for a while now, not familiar with this concept of performance vs background cores.

Looking because my mom wants a simple, inexpensive laptop to do office, browsing, & zoom via projector.

It should be good for basic tasks like web browsing and light video editing

Core 5 nowhere close to i5 or ultra 5 if that's what you want to know
My understanding is that Intel is rebranding their naming schemes. Core 5 and i5 are essentially the same level of processor. Going forward, there will not be i5 available. Ultra 5 would be the more premium version. Am I incorrect? This is what Copilot is explaining to me.

Of course there are different levels of Core 5 just like there are i5 so you'd have to compare appropriate versions.

You are misinformed. Core 5 and Core i5 are in different leagues
Are you sure about that? Everything I'm looking up supports what I said. CPU Benchmarks for example:

Intel Core 5 120U: Score 17,111
Intel Core i5-1335U: Score 14,331

From Google:

Intel is changing its processor naming scheme, dropping the "i" from Core i3, i5, i7, and i9. Instead, they will be referred to as Core 3, 5, 7, and 9. Additionally, a new "Core Ultra" branding is being introduced for high-end processors with advanced features like AI capabilities. This change is part of a broader effort to simplify the branding and better differentiate between mainstream and high-end chips. The new naming convention will be implemented with the 14th generation processors, codenamed Meteor Lake.

You are correct, the other guy is not correct.
Core 5 is the new name for i5. Core 5 120U is a 14th gen (Meteor Lake) processor.
U is for "Ultra low power", optimized for laptops. 2 performance cores + 10 efficiency cores.

Solid deal IMO, I needed something mainly for media and web browsing and this is great for the price. If you happen to have their PayBoo card, you can get it much cheaper!
