That's fair. Yeah that $225 deal was a good one and didn't last long. I saw that the $250 price was front page in April and March and thought there might still be some interest.

It's a decent deal imo. Though you can get 2TB more with the external hard drive, I believe this one has 2yr warranty as opposed to 1yr on the external enclosure.

Looks like the 26TB deal has expired, so this now appears to be the best deal. I've been waiting a month for this to go on sale again and it's finally here! I can't use the 26TB drive anyway.

HAMR? I'm trying to avoid it.

My research so far generally says HAMR is on 20+ GB drives, but I've seen comments that some Seagate drives go up to 24Gb without HAMR... that only raises the question of SMR?

they train their packaging people to toss them properly. They should also hold joint seminars with UPS on how to also deliver it properly by throwing it at least 8 feet in the air before delivery.

We are probably less then a month away from Prime Day in July!

I did just buy the 26TB Seagate external a few days ago, and got the package today. I'm getting between 216-235 MB/s speeds in actual use.

I might be interested in a couple of big hard drives for prime day. What are you guys thoughts, good sales on amazon for prime day, or "I'm not sure". Amazon is hit or miss for me for july prime days.

These large Barracudas are all HAMR. Seagate intends to make HAMR drives as small as 10TB. Their largest non-HAMR, CMR drive is the 24TB Exos X24 (specifically the X24 series). Assuming you want SATA, it would either be the ST24000NM002H or ST24000NM001H.

Can you help me to understand why HAMR drives are so bad. I just checked about these drives in google search, and they are suppose to be Seagate new tech to make drives get higher TB sizes (they discussed 50TB models coming out in 2026)...that can put higher TB sizes in drives and allow Seagate to make drives cheaper and cost less, they say under 10 dollars a TB.

HAMR HDDs are a newer technology and don't have a proven track record like traditional HDDs. They are notably more fragile and sensitive. Some speculate that the logistics of using a more fragile drive in the context of a consumer use would open it up to higher chance of failure. HAMR drives might be more sensitive to vibration of nearby drives, or even just the environment the average consumer might subject them to… for example, a common scenario where one might be moving their PC case around for various reasons could present higher level of risk to HAMR. Long story short, there's good reasons to want to avoid HAMR.

I never said they were bad or that you should stay away from them. Some people are skeptical of new technologies and I don't blame them. Actually, I haven't heard of any major issues with HAMR drives yet, but they've only been on the retail market for a few months. There do seem to be some slight downsides. They may run a little hotter, are less tolerant of vibration while running, and may be a tad slower in some areas. Still, I don't think they're bad. If you follow discussions of these new Barracudas, you may notice that I'm one of the few people pushing back against the FUD many people are spreading about them.
